EDD Retains MVP Form In 2016 Season Debut

The WNBA’s reigning MVP stayed busy during the offseason, but Elena Delle Donne was unable to make her 2016 debut in the Sky’s season opener because of an illness. That meant that a Wednesday afternoon matinee against reigning champion Minnesota Lynx and Maya Moore would be the first time EDD would suit up for the Sky in 2016.

Delle Donne picked up right where she left off, finishing with a game-high 28 points to go with six rebounds in a just under 31 minutes of action.

The dynamic forward is one of the most versatile talents the WNBA has ever seen, and her diverse skill set was on full display in her opening game. She shot 60 percent from the field and her efficient scoring day was not limited to strictly buckets in the paint. Delle Donne’s mid-range game looked to be in midseason form and that will continue to be her bread-and-butter.

Although the Sky fell Lynx, 97-80, those in attendance were treated to a tantalizing matchup of the league’s past two MVPs. While Delle Donne dropped 28, 2014 MVP Maya Moore finished with 22 points of her own. This was the first of three matchups between these elite scorers and it certainly lived up to its billing.
