WNBA Finals Live Blog: Game 5

MINNEAPOLIS — Well, it all comes down to this. The WNBA season is set to go the distance Wednesday night, culminating with a fifth and final game at the Target Center between the Minnesota Lynx and the Indiana Fever. Even an hour before tipoff the energy was palpable inside the arena as fans began to file in.

To this point, every game has been incredibly competitive. Each of the first four games have been decided by 10 points or less. If that remains the case tonight it would be the first time in WNBA history that has happened.

But that remains to be seen. Will Maya Moore and the Lynx win a third WNBA title and cement their dynasty? Or will first-year head coach Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever take home WNBA glory?

The game tips at 8 p.m. ET. And by the end of tonight a new WNBA champion will be crowned.

Lynx Win Third Title

It wasn’t always easy, but Minnesota won its third title in impressive fashion Wednesday night behind a huge effort from Sylvia Fowles and Lindsay Whalen.

Fowles finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Augustus added 16, most of which came in the second half.

For her effort Wednesday and throughout the series, Fowles was named the WNBA Finals MVP — the first of her career.

Lynx Cruise To 48-29 Lead After Three

Maya Moore continued to struggle to find good looks from the field, but that had no impact on the Lynx in the third quarter. Sylvia Fowles continued to dominate, pushing her totals to 16 points and seven rebounds.

And Seimone Augustus was huge, too, scoring 10 points.

Indiana just could not get out of its own way. By quarter’s end the Fever had tallied 20 turnovers. It’s hard to win a series-clinching game when you turn the ball over that many times.

One quarter remains, but it appears as if the Lynx are well on their way to a third WNBA title.

Let’s see what the fourth quarter has in store.

Lynx Lead 27-21 At Halftime

Minnesota opened up a 6-point lead at halftime, but both teams struggled shooting from the floor. Fowles has nine points and seven rebounds at halftime, and Seimone Augustus scored six in the first half for Minnesota.

Tamika Catchings put together what was probably her best half of the series, scoring seven points and pulling down eight boards. But she didn’t get a ton of other help.

Briann January had seven points in the first quarter but was held scoreless in the second quarter. In all, the Fever are shooting 29.6% from the floor, while the Lynx are shooting 30%. So, not much better.

Indiana was plagued by turnovers in the first half (12), but they held even in points off of turnovers. Both teams have scored 8 points off turnovers.

Will Stephanie White have her team ready to storm back in the second half? Will Maya Moore get going from the floor?

Whatever happens, this should be a fun second half.

Oh, and what would a game like this be without some Tamika Catchings history.

Fever Lead 17-15 After First Quarter

Despite a hot start from Lynx center Sylvia Fowles, the Indiana Fever lead the Minnesota Lynx 17-15 after one quarter of play. Fowles got going early and leads the Lynx with seven points and four rebounds.

Briann January leads the Fever with seven points on 3-of-6 shooting. Erlana Larkins, who has the primary duties of matching up against Fowles when she’s one the floor, picked up two early fouls. Marissa Coleman also has two fouls.

Not a ton to glean from the first quarter, but it looks like we’re in for another good one.
