Last Thursday, with the two teams at the top of the standings once again, the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks met for the first time this season. The Lynx took Round 1, winning 88-77 behind 20 points and 13 rebounds from Sylvia Fowles.

Penny Taylor’s Jersey Raised to the Rafters

WNBA legend Penny Taylor had her No. 13 officially retired by the Mercury on Sunday as part of Phoenix’s game against New York. Taylor played her final 10 seasons in Phoenix, finishing her career as a three-time WNBA champion.

Career Nights For Clarendon and Vandersloot

Veteran guards Layshia Clarendon and Courtney Vandersloot both posted career-best numbers this past week. In Atlanta’s win over Indiana — her former team — Clarendon dropped 27 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists. Vandersloot, meanwhile, set a new career high with 26 points and tied her career high of 13 assists during Chicago’s upset of the Lynx.

Players of the Month: Sylvia Fowles and Jonquel Jones

Lynx center Sylvia Fowles, arguably the frontrunner for MVP, recently won her second straight Western Conference Player of the Month award. Connecticut’s Jonquel Jones, who leads the league in rebounding, earned Eastern Conference Player of the Month for the first time.

Sun Complete Monumental Comeback Against Mystics

Speaking of Jones and the Sun…on Saturday they completed the biggest comeback in franchise history. After trailing by 22 late in the third quarter, Curt Miller’s team stormed all the way back to beat the Mystics. Connecticut (10-7) has won nine of its last 11 games and boasts the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Back-to-Back Rookie of the Month

Allisha Gray, the No. 4 overall pick out of South Carolina, has proven to be the league’s top rookie thus far. She just won her second straight Rookie of the Month award after leading all first-year players in scoring (11.4 ppg), rebounding (4.6 rpg), steals (1.27 spg) and minutes played (28.4 mpg) in June.

Griner Continues Breakout Season

Brittney Griner continues to make her own case as the league’s MVP. She just led Phoenix to a 3-0 week, averaging a ridiculous stat line of 25.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per contest.

Sun Make History With Players of the Week

Sharing Player of the Week honors with Griner is Alyssa Thomas, who is enjoying a breakout season of her own. Five different Sun players are averaging double-figure scoring this season. They recently made history with three different players earning Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors in a row.

Stewart Looking Like First-Time All-Star

The All-Star Game in Seattle is just two weeks away — starters will be announced on Tuesday — and the Storm’s own Breanna Stewart is making sure she has a spot. Stewart has scored 20-plus points in four straight games and is averaging 10 rebounds per game in this stretch.
