What They’re Saying: Becky Hammon Guides Spurs To Summer League Title

Former WNBA great Becky Hammon made history when she became the first female head coach at NBA Las Vegas Summer League. But she wasn’t finished there. Hammon added to that history by guiding the Spurs to Summer League glory.
San Antonio knocked off the Phoenix to take home the NBA Las Vegas Summer League championship.
“That was awesome. She did a really good job,” said Spurs forward and Summer League MVP Kyle Anderson. “We only lost one game out here in Vegas, and the game we lost she drew up a great play for us. She put us in a great position to win the game with a great play to get a last-second shot; it just didn’t go in. Every other thing other than that, she got our guys ready to play. We got a very difficult system down pat with just a little amount of time. When you have mothers or grandmothers or grew up around women, you’re used to hearing a female’s voice. You take heed in what they’ve got to tell you. It wasn’t a difference. She did a great job of communicating to us and getting to us. That’s a big step in the right direction, for her first time to be a head coach and she comes out here and wins a championship. That’s awesome.”
Players Praise Hammon
The tone of the conversation around Becky Hammon’s coaching success in Summer League sounded very similar. Jonathon Simmons, who signed a contract with the Spurs this summer, spoke highly of his time learning under Hammon in summer league.
“It’s always good to be a part of history. This day will go down in the books for years to come. I love her. I barely know her and I love her already,” Simmons told Sports Illustrated.
The Huffington Post detailed Hammon’s success and how numerous players have appreciated their time learning from Hammon.
“If there’s any debate remaining as to whether Hammon can provide insight into the men’s game,” writes Lucy McCalmont, “allow this performance to silence all of that. Many of Hammon’s players emphasized that they see her as a valuable voice on the bench.”
