Becky Hammon Makes Head Coaching Debut For Spurs In Summer League

Former WNBA great Becky Hammon made her head coaching debut Saturday for the San Antonio Spurs on the second day of Las Vegas Summer League action. Hammon became the first ever female head coach in NBA Summer League.

The Spurs fell to the New York Knicks 78-73 despite a 23-point effort from veteran Kyle Anderson.

Hammon, who was a WNBA All-Star with the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars in her playing days, was hired by Greg Popovich last August to serve on his staff as an assistant coach.

Popovich gave Hammon the head coaching duties for the Spurs Las Vegas summer league team. She served as an assistant coach during the Spurs games in NBA Utah Summer League.

“We just want to give them a foundation to build off,” Hammon said earlier this week. “From the first day we brought them into practice, you can already see great growth. Hopefully we can keep that trend going. We want to keep growing and keep progressing in the right direction, and hopefully for this Summer League team, our best basketball is still out in front of us.”

Hammon’s Spurs will be back in action on Sunday against the Milwaukee Bucks at 6:30 p.m. ET on NBA TV. All games can be watched online with NBA Summer League Live. To purchase NBA Summer League Live, click here.
