Phoenix Mercury Honor Legends at 20th Season Celebration

It felt like old times in Phoenix on Thursday night.
For one, the Mercury rolled to a victory over the Stars, led by a Diana Taurasi scoring outburst.
But the team also welcomed back legends of the past: Cheryl Miller, their original head coach and general manager; Jennifer Gillom, one of the two original players allocated to the Mercury when the league was established; Ann Meyers Drysdale, who helped build the championship rosters of 2007 and 2009 as GM before becoming vice president; Paul Westhead, former head coach who led the franchise to its first title in 2007; and Corey Gaines, former head coach who led the franchise to its second title in 2009.

The team also aired its second “My Mercury Story,” a video series aimed at telling the stories of fans and players who have been impacted by the league and the Mercury, and recognizing the young talent and fans who continue to grow the game. Thursday’s story featured a grandmother and granddaughter duo who have been inspired by the Mercury and have used the team’s example to get through the grandmother’s journey to overcome cancer.
