  • Overview
Coming off a 14-20 season in 2011, the Chicago Sky had a valuable chip going into 2012: the No. 2 pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft. How to use that chip was the big question, and according to Sky Assistant Coach Jeff House, it didnt take long for General Manager and Head Coach Pokey Chatman and her staff to answer that question.

During the off-season we sat down and looked at how the 2011 season evolved and while there are some very good players in the draft this year, very interesting players with lots of promise and potential, we just felt to get Swin Cash and Lecoe Willingham in here, with their respective skill sets and experience, was the right call, said House. Those are two players who have won multiple WNBA titles, who know what it takes to win in this league, and thats something we anticipate will be a tremendous addition to our team moving forward.

Chicago also acquired veterans Ticha Penicheiro (G) and Ruth Riley (C) to further buttress the experience factor of the team, while 2011 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Sylvia Fowles enters her fifth WNBA campaign in peak form, recently joining her new teammate Cash in being named as members of the U.S. Womens Olympic Basketball Team slated to compete for a fifth straight gold medal at the London Games 2012 this summer.

Holding the 23rd and 27th overall picks in the draft being held on Monday, April 16 at ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut, the Sky will be utilizing the latest in digital technology to account for Chatmans continued presence in Russia, coaching the Spartak Moscow team. Well do the same thing we did last year, said House, safely ensconced stateside for the draft.

Pokey will be at a computer via Skype and we will have open communication throughout the process. Were all set.

House was cagey about specific names, but did acknowledge Chicago is eyeing particular strengths in players.

We anticipate we might be getting some calls for our picks, which well always evaluate based on how the draft is going and what we think is best for the team, said House. Right now, looking at our roster I think a combo-type guard who has long-distance shooting range would be a nice fit and weve identified about six or eight players who might be able to play that role.
