<h2>What is gravity?</h2>
Gravity is a new way to quantify how much a player pulls defenders out of their normal assignments, essentially measuring how much attention they draw compared to what the spacing on the floor predicts.
Gravity uses player-tracking data and advanced machine-learning models to compare the pressure the defense is putting on each offensive player with the level of defensive pressure expected, given the offensive spacing.
In simple terms, Gravity tells us who forces defenses to react, even before they touch the ball.

<h2>How does gravity work?</h2>
The WNBA’s optical tracking system uses 3D pose detection to track 20 points on each player’s body at 25 frames per second. Those detailed body-position coordinates fuel the Machine Learning model, allowing it to capture every movement and spatial relationship on the floor.
The Gravity model compares the defensive pressure a player would receive on average based on the location of the ball and their position on the floor (Expected Defensive Pressure Score) to the pressure they actually draw (Defensive Pressure Score). The model learns how defenders typically behave in each scenario, and measures deviations that signal defensive adjustments. The result is a Gravity differential that measures how much attention a player pulls from the defense beyond expectation.
The Gravity score measures frame-by-frame impact, expressed as a normalized value on a -100 to 100 scale, with 0 reflecting the league average. Above 0? You’ve got pull. Above 80 off-ball? Defenses are terrified of you before you even catch the ball. Above 90? You’re bending the floor, and you’re a scorer that the defense simply cannot blink on. Basically, that player should be guarded from the parking lot.

<h2>Why does it matter?</h2>
Historically, the “eye test” has been the predominant way for spotting how certain players impact a defensive scheme, whether or not they have the ball. Coaches and fans have instinctively known which players demanded extra attention, but now, with the power of AWS AI and Machine Learning, the eye test just got smarter.
Gravity captures a player’s ability to impact the game before the play even begins. It highlights players who generate high-value spacing, draw mismatches, and make their teammates’ jobs easier – often without taking a shot. With Gravity, this invisible impact becomes visible, and the off-ball impact becomes measurable. Reframing WNBA starpower through data by quantifying players’ unique dominance.

As part of its new deal with the league, Ally will serve as the presenting partner of the WNBA’s first-ever “Rivals Week,” slated for Aug. 9-17, a time when the league’s superstars and rising stars are in the spotlight, when teams compete for statement wins and playoff positioning, and fans rally for bragging rights. WNBA Rivals Week presented by Ally will highlight both classic and emerging rivalries between teams and players, as some of the league’s superstars will go head-to-head in marquee matchups that define the intensity and passion of the league.
Rivals Week will tip off with two must-watch games on Saturday, Aug. 9 when the Caitlin Clark-led Indiana Fever host Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky (CBS) and the WNBA’s newest team, the Golden State Valkyries host their in-state rivals, the Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA League Pass).  Other key games across Rivals Week include a pair of rematches between the defending champion New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx, who met in a memorable WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV last year (Aug. 10 on ABC; Aug. 16 on CBS), and a rematch of New York and the Las Vegas Aces, who battled for the title in 2023 (Aug. 13 on ESPN). NEW YORK, April 8, 2025 – The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and Mielle, one of the fastest-growing Black-founded and women-led beauty brands, announced today an expansion of their third-year partnership to include a new Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) initiative. The WNBA and Mielle will launch the HBCU Event Intern Program at the AT&amp;T WNBA All-Star 2025, which is a one-of-a-kind event internship experience that provides career development opportunities in the business of basketball for a select group of HBCU students.  For the first time ever, this program will be held at the WNBA’s largest marquee event.
The initiative marks the league’s first social impact program focused on HBCUs. A diverse group of students will be selected from various HBCUs, including two student athletes from the Lady Pirates basketball team at Hampton University, with which Mielle proudly maintains an ongoing partnership.

WNBA and Mielle Launch New HBCU Event Intern Program at AT&T WNBA All-Star 2025, Celebrating Third Year as Official Textured Hair Sponsor

NEW YORK, March 27, 2025 – The WNBA and its Changemaker Collective — AT&amp;T, CarMax, Deloitte, Google, and Nike — are deepening their commitment to keeping girls in the game through their community partnership with VOICEINSPORT (VIS), a women-founded digital platform dedicated to increasing access, visibility, and virtual mentorship for young girls in sport.  The WNBA Changemaker Collective mission is to use their collective network to elevate, advance, and economically empower underrepresented groups, girls and women through the power of sport.
The collaboration builds on the success of the first year of the partnership, which provided virtual mentorship for 50,000 girls. The continuation of the virtual mentorship and leadership initiative, along with additional components, is projected to double the impact, providing virtual mentorship for 100,000 girls by the end of year two. Through this innovative collaboration, young athletes will have unparalleled access to WNBA players, sports industry executives, and expert resources to keep them engaged in sports and set them up for success beyond the game.

The community partnership will introduce the Build Your Career in Sport Leadership Series, featuring women executives from WNBA Changemaker brands. In addition, VIS will be launching the VIS App which will further unlock the athlete experience for girls. Girls will now have direct access to virtual mentorship opportunities, expert-led sessions, a leaderboard with prizes, and daily content focused on mind, body, and nutrition.

WNBA Changemakers and VOICEINSPORT Extend Community Partnership to Keep Girls in Sport

&#8211;WNBA and Opill® continue partnership with Level The Court initiative&#8211;

Because of the crucial need to reach communities whose need for reproductive health resources is especially high, Opill®, the WNBA and BWHI have developed Level The Court –an initiative designed to build confidence, strength and health equity for Black women and girls. A dedicated webpage launched today on WNBA.com, with personal stories, answers to common reproductive health questions, and ways to access Opill® for low or no cost — all with the goal of empowering fans to determine their own sexual health journey.
“For decades, Black women have disproportionately faced barriers to accessing safe and effective reproductive health services,” said Zsanai Epps, DrPH, MPH, CHES, Senior Director, Reproductive Health Initiatives at BWHI. “One way this partnership will Level The Court is by establishing the BWHI Opill® Access Fund to provide a three-month supply of Opill® to Black women facing temporary challenges.”
As part of Level The Court, the WNBA will work alongside Opill® and BWHI to deliver four events at HBCUs throughout the spring.

Comedian and Giggly Squad host Hannah Berner joins team Opill® and will be on campus in Miami on Wednesday, February 5th.  She will meet with students and talk about birth control and share why it is important to her. “I joined this team because I have had to scramble to get prescription birth control,” she said. “I want everyone to know that there is safe and effective over-the-counter birth control option in Opill®, so I’m going back to college!”
