As the WNBA begins its 30th anniversary season, the league is seeing an influx of global talent on the court. 
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, as of Thursday night, 51 players born outside the United States had played in at least one game this season. That already marks a league record for a single season, surpassing the previous high of 50 set in 2001.
We’re still only a week into the season. With several players still fulfilling overseas commitments before joining their WNBA teams, that record should continue to climb in the weeks to come.
On Thursday, Alex Fowler of Australia made her WNBA debut in the New York Liberty’s 100-82 win over the Portland Fire. Fowler is the eighth international player to take the court for the Liberty this season — two shy of the single-team record of 10 set by Golden State last year.
While Australia still leads the way in international representation on WNBA rosters, France continues to emerge as a major pipeline of talent, following its push to the brink against the United States in the gold medal game at the 2024 Olympics. Through Thursday’s games, five of the league’s 32 players averaging at least 15 points per game are from France.
The Liberty and France are both well represented among these nine international players who have stood out during the season’s opening week.

<h3>Marine Johannès, New York Liberty (France)</h3>

The sharpshooting Liberty guard leads the league with 15 total 3-pointers made through four games, while her 3.8 made threes per game rank second behind Toronto’s Marina Mabrey. In addition to her shooting, Johannès is a playmaker, leading the Liberty (and tied for 10th in the league) with five assists per game. Her impact hasn’t been limited to offense, either, as Johannès ranks fifth in the WNBA in steals at 2.3 per game.

<h3>Pauline Astier, New York Liberty (France)</h3>
Johannès isn’t the only French guard thriving in Liberty seafoam so far this season. Astier, a 24-year-old undrafted rookie, has been brilliant in her first four WNBA games. She is New York’s second-leading scorer behind Breanna Stewart at 16.8 points per game and has shot the lights out — 62.5% from the field and 45.5% from beyond the arc — while adding four assists, nearly four rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

<h3>Dominique Malonga, Seattle Storm (France)</h3>
The No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft showed flashes of her immense potential as a rookie while coming off the bench in all 42 games, averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in 14.3 minutes per game. Now a full-time starter, logging over 26 minutes per game in her second season, the 6-foot-6 center leads the Storm in points (16.0), rebounds (7.3), and blocks (2.0), which are tied for 20th, 11th, and 4th in the WNBA, respectively.

<h3>Jade Melbourne, Seattle Storm (Australia)</h3>
The Liberty isn’t the only team with multiple international stars near the top of their leaderboards. Melbourne is Seattle’s second-leading scorer behind Malonga at 14 points per game on incredible efficiency — she’s shooting 61.9% from the field and 50% from 3-point range through three games. Melbourne, the Storm’s 2022 third-round pick, also leads the team in assists (5.0, tied for 10th in the WNBA) and is tied with rookie Flau’jae Johnson for the team lead with 1.7 steals per game.

<h3>Kamilla Cardoso, Chicago Sky (Brazil)</h3>

In her third WNBA season, Cardoso is putting up career-best numbers through her first two games, averaging 15 points and 10.5 rebounds per game (tied for fourth in the league). She is one of only five players averaging a double-double so far this season, joining Shakira Austin, Aneesah Morrow, Kiki Iriafen, and former Sky teammate Angel Reese.

<h3>Bridget Carleton, Portland Fire (Canada)</h3>
The top pick in this year’s expansion draft, Carleton put up a career-best 26 points and five 3-pointers to help lead the Fire to their first win Tuesday. Through three games, she is averaging 16.7 points and 3.3 triples per game (third in the league behind Johannès and Mabrey) while shooting 41.7% from deep. She is Portland’s second-leading scorer — behind our next entry — and is tied for sixth in the league in steals at two per game.

<h3>Carle Leite, Portland Fire (France)</h3>
For the second straight season, Leite was selected in an expansion draft — chosen by the Valkyries in 2025 and by the Fire in 2026. The former top-10 draft pick had 21 points in Portland’s first win, following an 18-point effort in her Fire debut. Leite’s 19.5 points per game rank 11th in the WNBA, and she joins Indiana’s Caitlin Clark as the only players averaging at least 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists this season.

<h3>Jovana Nogic, Phoenix Mercury (Serbia)</h3>
After playing pro ball overseas since 2019, the 28-year-old Serbian guard signed with the Mercury in April and has made an immediate impact through her first three games. Nogic ranks second in the WNBA in 3-point shooting at 66.7% (8-for-12), third on the Mercury in scoring at 12.3 points per game behind veterans Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas, and first on the team in plus/minus. The Mercury have outscored opponents by 34 points during her 66 minutes on the court.

<h3>Janelle Salaün, Golden State Valkyries (France)</h3>

Like Nogic, Salaun has played professionally overseas since 2019. After joining the Valkyries for their inaugural season last year, Salaun averaged 11.3 points and 5.1 rebounds while starting 33 of her 36 games as a WNBA rookie. Despite coming off the bench in her first three games this season, Salaun has been even better, averaging a team-high 15.7 points and 3.3 3-pointers per game on 50% shooting from beyond the arc.

NEW YORK, Dec. 21, 2023 – In celebration of World Basketball Day, the WNBA today announced it will continue to broaden the league’s content offering and expand its international presence by providing fans on-demand access to over 50 games to be played this winter by the WNBL, the premier women’s basketball league in Australia. The games will be available for free to WNBA App users.
This marks the first time the WNBA will stream WNBL games and additional content.
“Key pillars of our growth strategy focus on the globalization of the WNBA brand and building robust social and digital content on WNBA owned and operated platforms that allow the WNBA to be at the center of the women’s basketball ecosystem,” said WNBA Chief Growth Officer Colie Edison. “At a time when accessibility is a key factor in driving the growth of women&#8217;s sports, adding WNBL games and additional content provides a new and exciting way to deepen fan engagement on the WNBA app. With a number of current WNBA players starring in the WNBL this season, this aligns with our long-term goal of providing year-round, direct-to-consumer content to fans worldwide.”

Through its association with the WNBL, the WNBA App will deliver more than 50 WNBL games on demand over the final three months of its regular season and the league’s entire slate of postseason games along with short form content.
The WNBL season, already in progress, features eight teams. Regular-season play is set to conclude on Saturday, Feb. 24. The league’s best-of-three semifinals will take place from Feb. 28 through March 7, with the best-of-three Finals set to tip off on March 10. Among the current WNBA players playing in the WNBL are Jordin Canada (Los Angeles Sparks), Cayla George (Las Vegas Aces), Naz Hillmon (Atlanta Dream), Aari McDonald (Atlanta), Jade Melbourne (Seattle Storm), Mercedes Russell (Seattle), Brianna Turner (Phoenix Mercury), Kristy Wallace (Indiana Fever), Sami Whitcomb (Seattle), Jocelyn Willoughby (New York Liberty) and Amanda Zahui B (Indiana).

After a near three week break due to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, EuroLeague action resumed on Feb. 19. With the playoffs beginning on Mar. 11, teams are looking to make a last playoff push in the final week.
Among the biggest storylines from this past week was the debut of  Breanna Stewart for the already dominant UMMC Ekaterinburg. Having won the EuroLeague the past two seasons, UMMC Ekaterinburg currently sits in first place with a league-best 12-1 record. With the addition of the 2018 WNBA MVP and Finals MVP, the team currently boasts an All-Star starting five.

Thriving in her role as a complementary player to WNBA teammate Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones led ZVVZ USK Praha to a 89-57 victory over Reyer Venezia. In the win, Jones recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. The most staggering part of Jones&#8217; performance was her shooting efficiency, as she went 10/13 (76.9%) from the field. As a result of her performance, Jones earned the Top Performer award for Week 13 of EuroLeague action. Largely a bench player in Connecticut over the past few years, it will be intriguing to see if Jones&#8217; breakout EuroLeague season translates to the WNBA in 2020.

Another game, another strong performance from Alyssa Thomas. In ZVVZ USK Praha&#8217;s most recent 89-57 victory, Thomas recorded 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Averaging 18.6 points per game and league-highs in rebounds (11.7) and steals (3.3) per game, Thomas has emerged as a top EuroLeague MVP candidate and has led ZVVZ USK Praha to the second-best record (11-2) in the league.

Since joining LDLC ASVEL Feminin in early January, Alysha Clark has emerged as the team&#8217;s go-to option. Currently leading the team in points, steals and efficiency per game, Clark had arguably her best performance of the season in the team&#8217;s last contest. With the season on the line, Clark posted a season-high 21 points, seven rebounds and also tacked on four assists to lead LDLC ASVEL Feminin past Arka Gdynia, 92-82. Sitting at 7-6 with one more regular-season game left on the schedule, LDLC ASVEL Feminin faces No. 1 Fenerbahce Oznur Kablo in a pivotal game. With the odds stacked against them, LDLC ASVEL Feminin will likely depend heavily on Clark in this matchup, with the hopes that she can prevail and lead the team to victory and a Quarter-Finals berth.

It has been a busy time for DeWanna Bonner.
After signing a multi-year contract with the Connecticut Sun last week, Bonner played in a key game for Dynamo Kursk. Entering the game with a 5-7 record and facing 6-6 Sopron Basket, Dynamo Kursk needed a win in order to stay in playoff contention. Led by Bonner, who filled up the stat sheet with 20 points, six rebounds and four steals, Dynamo Kursk defeated Sopron Basket 74-61. Currently sitting at 6-7, Dynamo Kursk is still in playoff contention. Facing a favorable matchup next week against 3-10 Arka Gydnia, Dynamo Kursk will likely depend on WNBA veterans Bonner and Angel McCoughtry to lead the team to victory. However, even with a victory next week that would get the team to 7-7, they&#8217;re not guaranteed a Quarter-Finals berth and would likely need other events to occur.
<h2>Alex Bentley </h2>
Overseas Team: Gelecek Koleji Cukurova (Turkey)
WNBA Team: Atlanta Dream
Stats (2/19): 18 PTS | 7 AST | 1 STL
Although Gelecek Koleji Cukruova will miss the playoffs with a 3-10 record and one week remaining in the regular season, that didn&#8217;t deter the team from going out without a fight. Led by Alex Bentley, who posted a season-high 18 points and tied a season-high with seven assists, Gelecek Koleji Cukurova defeated Castors Braine, 70-60, snapping an eight-game losing streak. It was Bentley&#8217;s best performance of the season and one in which she showcased her ability to attack teams with her scoring and passing.

<h2>Erica Wheeler</h2>

WNBA Team: Indiana Fever
Stats (1/28): 22 PTS | 4 REB | 8 AST
Coming off a breakout 27-point performance in her previous game, Wheeler had yet another impressive outing, recording 22 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Although Nadezhda fell to ZVVZ USK Praha, 86-67, it&#8217;s a great sign that Wheeler is starting to find her stride after struggling at the beginning of the season. With the playoffs approaching rapidly, Nadezhda will depend heavily on Wheeler&#8217;s production moving forward.

In ZVVZ USK Praha&#8217;s most recent 86-67 victory over Nadezhda, Alyssa Thomas finished with 18 points, 19 rebounds and six assists. Averaging 18.4 points and a league-high 12.1 rebounds per game, Thomas is a legitimate EuroLeague MVP candidate. To make it even more impressive, Thomas&#8217; production has helped lead ZVVSZ USK Praha to a 10-2 record, which is second-best in the league.

The 2019 WNBA regular season points per game leader has continued her dominance overseas. Averaging 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, Griner recorded her second consecutive double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in UMMC Ekaterinburg&#8217;s 87-67 victory over TTT Riga. Griner also tacked along three blocks and has been a catalyst for the 2018 and 2019 EuroLeague Champions. With the team currently boasting a league-best 11-1 record, UMMC Ekaterinburg&#8217;s quest for a three-peat is in full force.

After posting 20 points and five rebounds in her last game, Griner recorded 22 points, seven rebounds and three blocks to help lead UMMC Ekaterinburg past Reyer Venezia, 97-44. Griner is fourth in the league in points per game (17.9) and fifth in blocks per game (1.4). For Griner and UMMC Ekaterinburg, their most recent victory clinched a berth in the EuroLeague Women Quarterfinals.

After missing the entire 2019 WNBA season due to a knee injury, Angel McCoughtry returned to the court on Jan. 8 as a member of Dynamo Kursk. The 5x WNBA All-Star and 7x WNBA All-Defensive Team member showed signs of rust in her first game back, recording just eight points and three rebounds in a loss. In her second game back, McCoughtry returned to form, finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals in 23 minutes of play.

Arguably the most complete player in EuroLeague Women this season, Alyssa Thomas continued her dominance in an 82-64 victory over Bourges Basket. Thomas flirted with a triple-double and finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in the win.

It was yet another double-double for Thomas, who is averaging 19.6 points (2nd in league) and a league-high 12.2 rebounds per game. After filling up the stat sheet and averaging 18.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 7.6 assists during the WNBA Finals 2019, Thomas&#8217; increased production has continued overseas.
<h2>Courtney Vandersloot</h2>
Team: UMMC Ekaterinburg (Russia)
League: EuroLeague Women
Stats (1/8): 10 PTS | 8 REB | 7 AST
Running point for the back-to-back defending champions of the EuroLeague, Courtney Vandersloot has been thriving. In their most recent 71-50 win over Nadezhda, Vandersloot stuffed the stat sheet for 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. She currently leads the league in assists per game (7.7) and has been key to the team&#8217;s 8-1 start.

In BLMA&#8217;s most recent 85-79 victory over Arka Gdynia, Mavunga posted a season-high 30 points while tacking on six rebounds, three steals and three blocks.

Having appeared in 49 games and averaging 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game off the bench over the past two seasons in the WNBA, it will be interesting to see if Mavunga&#8217;s breakout performance overseas is an indication of increased production this upcoming WNBA season.

On the season, Griner is averaging 17.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. At the age of 29, Griner has shown no signs of slowing down and continues to be one of the most dominant Centers in women&#8217;s basketball.

After helping the Connecticut Sun reach the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2005, Alyssa Thomas continued the momentum from a spectacular 2019 WNBA season to Europe.
Thomas did it all for ZVVZ USK Praha in a 102-62 regular season Group A victory against Castors Braine, posting an impressive 26-point, 18-rebound double-double while adding four steals and three assists. As a result of her stellar play, Thomas earned Top Performer honors and the Fans&#8217; MVP of Week 7 EuroLeague action.

Through seven games, USK Praha sits at 6-1 and Thomas is averaging 19.1 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 4 SPG, and 3.7 APG. She&#8217;s currently second in the league in PPG and first in RPG and SPG. If she continues at this pace, there&#8217;s a good chance that Thomas can finish the season leading the league in a variety of statistical categories.

After helping the Washington Mystics secure their first title in franchise history and becoming the first reserve player to win Finals MVP, Emma Meesseman went overseas to play for the defending EuroLeague Champions, UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia.
In her most recent game, Meesseman erupted for 28 points and shot above 90% (11/12 FGM) from the field. She also tacked on five rebounds and three assists to help UMMC Ekaterinburg defeat Gelecek Koleji Cukurova 112-56 in regular season Group A play.

After enjoying a breakout sophomore season with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2019, Maria Vadeeva continues to impress abroad.
In UMMC Ekaterinburg&#8217;s last victory, Vadeeva finished with 19 points (8/12 FGM) and nine rebounds. This season in the EuroLeague, the 21-year-old has averaged 18 PPG and 8 RPG. On a team filled with accomplished WNBA veterans, Vadeeva&#8217;s breakout season bodes well for the Sparks and her development moving forward.
