The Mystics releasing Simms from her hardship contract likely means that Elena Delle Donne (ankle), Kristi Toliver (foot) and Ariel Atkins (ankle) are close to returning from their injuries. Simms didn't make any appearances for Washington after joining the team on Aug. 13.

A former second-round pick of the Mystics in 2017, Simms returns to Washington for another stint. Simms played 14 games with Washington and Indiana in 2017 and 29 total games with Phoenix in 2022 and 2023. The move also suggests that no more than two of the Mystics 'questionable' players will actually play Sunday, according to Tyler Byrum of NBC Sports Washington. Hardship deals are given for teams when a roster is at 10 players or fewer, and right now, the Mystics have eight healthy players, including Simms.
