Pre-Break Recap

If there’s one constant in the Wings’ season, it’s been their inconsistency. Dallas’ up-and-down season started without missing star Skylar Diggins, sidelined since last June while recovering from an ACL tear. The team overcame her absence and surged to a 3-1 record, but couldn’t maintain their early-season momentum and dropped the next six games. Diggins’ reinsertion into the starting lineup seemed to have given the team the boost it needed and the Wings proceeded to go on a four-game winning streak in June. The tide turned yet again soon after, and Dallas is 2-9 since June 25.

Pre-Break Highlight
Triple-Overtime Thriller in Phoenix; Wings 117, Mercury 111

The Wings just seem to have the Mercury’s number this season. Dallas has beaten Phoenix three times this year, never in more exciting fashion than the 3-OT thriller on June 18. DeWanna Bonner helped the Mercury build a 17-point lead on their home floor, but a furious Wings comeback forced overtime. The teams went back and forth before Odyssey Sims took over, scoring the tying basket to force a third OT and adding 10 in the final frame to will her team to victory. Skylar Diggins added 19 of her 27 after halftime as Dallas prevailed, 117-111, in the highest scoring game of the WNBA season so far.

3 Standouts

Skylar Diggins

The dynamic guard started the season on the sidelines while recovering from her ACL tear and the team struggled mightily without her at full strength. Diggins was reinstated to the starting lineup mid-June and while she is still searching for consistency, we’ve seen flashes of her sensational scoring touch that helped her become the a 2014 All-WNBA First Teamer.

Odyssey Sims

In her third year in the WNBA, the native Texan has continued to blossom as one of the leading guards in the league. Sims leads the Wings in both points (14.6) and assists (4.0) per game. As Sims’ game continues to expand, the Wings can rest easily knowing her and Diggins are the cornerstones for their exciting backcourt of the future.

Courtney Paris

The Wings’ center has continued her consistent inside play from last season, recording six double-doubles and reaching double-digit rebounds in nine games this season. She currently ranks fifth in the league in rebounding with 8.5 per game, including a league-leading 3.1 offensive rebounds per game, while ranking seventh in field goal percentage with a robust 56.7%.

Post-Break Preview

A playoff berth is still very much within the Wings’ grasp. Despite going into the break as losers of six straight, Dallas is just a half game out of the eighth and final playoff spot. While the Sparks and Lynx have already secured their postseason participation, the rest of the Western Conference is close enough that the Wings could still make their presence felt. With a resurgent Skylar Diggins and a post-break schedule that includes six of nine games against sub-.500 teams, the league’s most unpredictable team won’t shock anyone if they manage to snag the seventh or perhaps even sixth seed.
