Team Needs:
The 2016 season comes with a new city (Dallas), a new identity (Wings), new colors and a new fan base for the team formerly known as the Tulsa Shock. But while much will be new, the team will also welcome back a pair of All-Stars after missing most of, if not all, of last season. Point guard Skylar Diggins played just nine games last season before suffering a torn ACL and Glory Johnson missed the entire season on maternity leave. Even without these two All-Stars, the Shock made their first playoff appearance since 2009 after going 18-16 on the season.
While the Wings will get Diggins and Johnson back, one player that is not making the trek from Tulsa to Dallas is Riquna Williams, who was traded to Los Angeles in exchange for Erin Phillips and a 2017 first-round draft pick in March. Williams, who set the WNBA’s single-game scoring record (51 points) while in Tulsa, was the team’s leading three-point shooter (56 on the season), so finding a player who can knock down perimeter shots is a need heading into 2016.
With the backcourt of Diggins and Odyssey Sims among the best in the WNBA, the Wings could look for their own namesake — a wing that can shoot the three to compliment their talented backcourt. The Wings could also use some help on the defensive end, as they ranked last in the WNBA in defensive efficiency last season, allowing 103 points per 100 possessions. Having the second-best offense (103.9) kept them with a positive net rating, but a defensive upgrade could boost that rating even higher.
