Before the games start counting, teams have been gearing up for the season with media days and preseason action. A couple of highlights:

There will be plenty of time over the next four months for challengers to step in their way. But until they’re dethroned, the Phoenix Mercury remain the defending champs with the brightest spotlight on them heading into 2015.

The spotlight will be on center Brittney Griner in particular as she tries to carry the team in Diana Taurasi’s absence.

6. #Analytics: Mystics, Lynx Play Experimental Scrimmage

The WNBA served as experimental ground last week when the Washington Mystics hosted an exhibition game dubbed an “analytics scrimmage” in which mid-range jumpers were not allowed and the shot clock was set at only 20 seconds.

Mystics owner Ted Leonsis hoped the rule changes could produce some useful information in how the game is evolving over time.

About 185 WNBA games this season will be available on LiveAccess, the WNBA’s streaming video service, which complements the nationally televised ESPN, ABC and NBA TV games. (The free trial for the 2015 season runs from June 5 to 9.)
