The Tulsa Shock may have finished 12-22 in 2014, but they boast a roster with some of the WNBA’s biggest names. Skylar Diggins, Odyssey Sims and Glory Johnson are all talented young players that helped the Shock post the third-rated offense in the league in 2014.
Now, the Shock are in a position to improve their roster through the draft in an attempt to push an already promising team to the WNBA playoffs for the first time. Team president Steve Swetoha and Williams will have a diificult choice to make when the clock starts for the No. 2 pick in the draft on April 16.
“We always want to take the player who fits our need,” Williams said. “I think in our position we could have a need in the perimeter area and also in the post area.”
Connecticut sharpshooter Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis may be available if the Storm pass on her with the top pick, and adding that talent on the wing would only help an already potent offense. Would the Shock be willing to take the chance on UConn’s all-time leader in three-point field goals, or will it look to add a player better suited to help out defensively?
“(Mosqueda-Lewis) is one of the pure shooters of all-time in collegiate basketball, and when you translate that over to the pro game, it’s hard to really find pure shooters out there that can really consistently put the ball in the basket,” Williams said.
One thing is for sure: the Shock will have plenty of options. Minnesota center Amanda Zahui B. and Notre Dame guard Jewell Loyd both opted to enter the WNBA Draft and their presence changed the landscape of the top three picks. Whatever the case, the Shock are in prime position to add another young, talented contributor to an already talented core and make a push for the playoffs.
