Team USA Mini Camp Opens in Las Vegas
WNBA.com is in Las Vegas for USA Basketball Women’s National Team three-day training camp ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Here are some sights and sounds from the first day of practice.
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — This week’s mini camp started with a reminder of past success.
In the team’s first huddle, the members of this summer’s FIBA World Championship team that were at the camp received their rings, starting an echo of “oohs” and “aahs” from the rest of the players.

From there, however, head coach Geno Auriemma and the 23 players that suited up were all business. Auriemma’s opening speech focused on this team not taking anything for granted. Despite the recent success, Auriemma urged them to take this day of training — and every day from here until the Olympics — seriously. Lastly, he urged every player to enjoy the moment. He stressed that this type of opportunity would not last forever, and he looked at vets like Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi.
From there, the team did a series of fast-paced drills — fast break execution, shooting drills, defensive shifts — before splitting into three teams and finishing with 5-on-5 scrimmages.

Monday’s mini camp featured a varied group of veterans and young players.
“I saw a group of players who are very excited to be here, actually very eager to learn,” Sue Bird said. “We put in some offenses and you could tell everyone picked it up pretty quickly, and then of course they are here to make a team at some point and prove that they should be in this mix of players and should be on the team. So it was a good mix of seeing everybody, getting to know everybody a little bit and also being competitive.”

“I thought everybody worked really hard,” Skylar Diggins said of Day 1. “We’ve got a great group that are really going to compete and push you. It’s going to be hard to pick 12 players out of this group. Just the intensity of the first day, the first drills, the intensity in the warmups. That’s what were here to do is compete and I that that’s what – we got a lot done today.”
When the practice concluded, the team took time to sing “Happy Birthday” to WNBA legend and Team USA assistant coach Dawn Staley.
