A Look at Day 2 of Team USA Mini Camp in Las Vegas

WNBA.com is in Las Vegas for USA Basketball Women’s National Team three-day training camp ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Here are some sights and sounds from the first day of practice.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — The second day of training camp, according to coach Geno Auriemma, was a much crisper day than the first. The team went through many of the same drills, but the execution, he felt, was much better.

After the team took their headshots and team photos, Auriemma addressed the team in the opning huddle. He reminded players that when playing on this team, players should only worry about doing what they do best. If that fulfills a role that the team needs, then that should be their focus.

Auriemma then took the players through a series of fast-break drills, shooting drills and half-court offensive drills. Auriemma spent the most time talking to the team about motion in the half-court offense, stressing that it’s just about “playing basketball” and not about having a lot of set offensive plays.

Maya Moore expanded on this, explaining that the time the team spends together during this brief camps is crucial to building team chemistry and trust.

“Obviously, we’re all very confident players,” Moore said. “But we don‘t get a lot of time together, so when we do get together it helps build just a little bit more confidence when we are on the big stage, the world stage. Just as far as working together in an offensive system that gives us a lot of freedom to make reads and play off of each other.”

After a strong second day, several of the players, especially the younger ones, expressed the benefits of competing in this kind of atmosphere with elite players and coaches..

“It’s just been great. They’re all so welcoming,” Storm rookie Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis said of the veterans. “They’re all really open to letting us try to learn from them and gain as much knowledge as we can, so the fact that they’re so receptive to the younger guys is awesome.”

“I really have enjoyed being able to come back from injury and get back into the swing of things with an elite group of players like this,” Minnesota’s Monica Wright said. “I think it’s going to be good for me in the long run heading towards training camp. So, so far I’m loving it. I’m loving being able to learn from Geno [Auriemma] and some of these top coaches in the nation, and I’m just a sponge right now.”

In addition to the great learning experience, the players also receive cool kicks.
