Race To MVP: July 21

The 2015 season has been dominated by Elena Delle Donne. She’s been the talk of the league since the season tipped, and for good reason. She’s having one of the best seasons this league has ever seen. But with each passing week, the WNBA’s best continue to make a push to claim the top spot in the race to bring home the WNBA MVP award, none more notable than the reigning MVP herself, Maya Moore.
1. Elena Delle Donne

Elena Delle Donne has been so good this season that even after a few sub-par performances she’s still undoubtedly the favorite to bring home MVP honors. Over the past week, she was sixth in the league in scoring at 18 points per game, which would be phenomenal for almost any other player, but just average for her. EDD ended the week by returning to “form,” scoring 29 points on 13-of-23 shooting and pulling down 13 rebounds for her league-best ninth double-double.
2. Maya Moore

Maya Moore has looked like the biggest challenger to EDD as the All-Star break approaches. Moore averaged 29 points over the past week and has the Lynx sitting atop the Western Conference at 12-3 — a good three games better than the Phoenix Mercury. Moore is third in the league in scoring at 20.4 points per game and is also averaging a career-best 2.1 steals per game. With Seimone Augustus currently sidelined, the Lynx may count of Moore as much as ever.
3. Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner has been unstoppable since her return to the Phoenix lineup in late June. She’s averaging a league-best 4.2 blocks per game through eight games and is a big reason why the Mercury have the third-best defensive rating in the league. The Mercury have surged to second place in the Western Conference and seem poised to challenge Minnesota for the top spot as the season continues.
4. Tina Charles

The New York Liberty have emerged as one of the surprises of the 2015 WNBA season. They lead the Eastern Conference and are getting key contributions from their entire rotation. But the most consistent, vital output has come from 2012 WNBA MVP Tina Charles. She’s averaging 16.5 points and 9.3 rebounds a game and was recently named a WNBA All-Star starter for the fourth time.
5. Angel McCoughtry

Angel McCoughtry’s play this season has made her one of the constants on this list. Though Atlanta may beat the bottom of the East, it’s not because McCoughtry isn’t performing well. She’s second in the league in scoring (20.9 PPG) and is getting to the free-throw line more than anyone else in the league. Her aggressiveness on both ends of the floor is what drives the Dream and that will be key in the second half of the season as Atlanta tries to make a playoff push.
6. Nneka Ogwumike

Nneka Ogwumike has taken her game to another level since she returned to the court for the Los Angeles Sparks. Through her first 10 games of the 2015 season, she’s averaging career bests in rebounds and points. Simply put, she’s been phenomenal. They’re still in the hunt for a playoff spot and if Ogwumike’s early success is any indicator, they’re poised to make a push in the second half of the season.
7. DeWanna Bonner

DeWanna Bonner continues to be solid for the Phoenix Mercury. She’s still accounting for more of the scoring load than she has in the past, but she’s handled that well. She’s sixth in the league in scoring (17.1 PPG), which is the most she’s averaged since 2012.
8. Alex Bentley

Although the Sun have faltered as of late, Alex Bentley has continued to shine bright. The third-year pro is scoring 17.1 points per contest and leads the league in total steals (37). She’s played her way into the All-Star conversation and will be key to the Sun’s fight for playoff position in the second half of the year.
9. Kelsey Bone

For as consistent as Alex Bentley has been this year, she’s not the only third-year player that’s been key for the Sun. Kelsey Bone has been dominant in the frontcourt, averaging 15.4 points and 6.3 rebounds for Anne Donovan’s squad. All of her numbers — points, rebounds, assists — are career bests through the first half of the season.
10. Cappie Pondexter

Elena Delle Donne undoubtedly gets most of the praise in Chicago, but what Cappie Pondexter has done in her first season cannot be ignored. She’s helped lead a Sky offense that’s posting a league-best 107.8 offensive rating (points scored per 100 possessions) and is averaging 16.4 points per game (8th in the league).
