Race to MVP: July 14

Elena Delle Donne’s reign of dominance this season has yet to be topped in the Race to MVP, but week after week other players begin to push their way towards the top. This week is no different, as Maya Moore, Angel McCoughtry and Brittney Griner continue to make their case for top honors.

1. Elena Delle Donne

In an ever-changing Eastern Conference landscape, one of the consistent storylines has been the play of Elena Delle Donne. She just continues to be the most electric player in the league this season, averaging 25.8 points per game while shooting just over 50 percent for the season. Her play has helped Chicago become the first team in the East to eight wins.

2. Maya Moore

She’s back. Well, okay, she never left. But the Maya Moore that has shown up recently has looked every bit like the one that took home 2014 WNBA MVP honors. Moore has Minnesota atop the Western Conference standings and is up to third in the league in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game. She scored 29 in a head-to-head battle against Delle Donne over the weekend and scored 20 in the win over the Stars.

3. Angel McCoughtry

Angel McCoughtry was phenomenal this past week, just like she has been all season. She has yet to score in single digits through 13 games and is second only to Elena Delle Donne in scoring. She shot 9-of-12 from the field and scored 32 points in the Dream’s win over the Liberty. That type of efficiency could earn the Dream some more victories and also move McCoughtry up this list.

4. Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner’s impact in Phoenix has been immediate and, well, remarkable. The reigning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year has 23 blocks through her six games played. To put that into perspective, Elena Delle Donne leads the league with 29 and she’s played all of the Sky’s 13 games. Griner is averaging 3.8 blocks per game and is third in the league in total blocks. She’s getting it done offensively, too, averaging 17.8 points per contest.

5. Nneka Ogwumike

The 2013 WNBA Rookie of the Year is continuing to post incredible numbers since returning from an early season injury. Ogwumike is scoring 18.5 points per game while pulling down 11.5 rebounds per game — the most of her career.

6. DeWanna Bonner

Brittney Griner’s return has been a large reason why Phoenix is surging, but DeWanna Bonner’s consistency is arguably just as important. Bonner’s averaging 17.5 points per game, which is the most she’s averaged since 2012 when she had to shoulder a similar amount of the Mercury’s scoring load. Bonner currently boasts a 23.4 PER (Player Efficiency Rating), per basketballreference.com, which is the highest of her career.

7. Cappie Pondexter

Elena Delle Donne has been the talk of the league and the focus of most discussions about the Chicago Sky. The play of Cappie Pondexter, however, should not be overlooked. Pondexter took home Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors this week after 24-point and 29-point performances in Chicago’s wins against Minnesota and Connecticut. She’s fourth in the league in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game.

8. Tina Charles

The New York Liberty are playing well and sit just a half game back of first in the Eastern Conference. Tina Charles, the 2012 WNBA MVP, has been a major catalyst in their hot play as of late. Charles had 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Washington. She leads the league in defensive rebounding percentage and total rebounding percentage.

9. Alex Bentley

The Sun have cooled off ever so slightly after a hot start, but third-year guard Alex Bentley has continued to excel. She’s averaging 16.8 points per game — good enough for sixth in the league — and she’s second in the league in steals per game (2.73).

10. Tamika Catchings

The Indiana Fever have found their stride, winners of four straight and right in the thick of the playoff hunt in the Eastern Conference. Per usual, they’ve been led by one of the league’s all-time greats — Tamika Catchings. While she’s not putting up startling numbers, she continues to find other ways to leave her mark on what the Fever have been able to accomplish.
