The two schools at the top of this list should come as no surprise as they have been the preeminent collegiate programs over the 30-year history of the WNBA – the University of Connecticut and the University of Tennessee each with over 45 players drafted into the WNBA.
Geno Auriemma has been at the helm at UConn for the entirety of the WNBA’s existence, beginning his tenure in 1985 and leading the Huskies to 12 NCAA championships. The Connecticut program has sent 52 players to the league and produced some of the best players in WNBA history, highlighted by No. 1 overall draft picks Sue Bird (2002), Diana Taurasi (2004), Tina Charles (2010), Maya Moore (2011), and Breanna Stewart (2016).
The late Pat Summitt led Tennessee until 2012, winning eight national championships and sending plenty of Lady Volunteers to the WNBA. Of the 46 WNBA players drafted out of Tennessee, 29 came during Summitt’s tenure, including a pair of No. 1 overall picks in Chamique Holdsclaw (1999) and Candace Parker (2008).

When looking at schools that have delivered the most first-round draft picks, there&#8217;s a change from the list of most overall draft picks.
UConn, Tennessee and Stanford remain in first, second and third place, respectively. South Carolina enters the conversation after touting two players in the first round of the 2026 WNBA Draft, bringing their total to 15 to round out the top four. Duke and Baylor are tied for fifth place with 11 players.

Back to trivia time. What was the only occasion in which a school had three players taken with the first three overall picks (1-2-3) in the WNBA Draft?
The answer is the 2016 Draft when UConn teammates Breanna Stewart (No. 1, Seattle), Moriah Jefferson (No. 2, San Antonio), and Morgan Tuck (No. 3, Connecticut) were the first three names called to the stage that night.

Just a week after winning the program&#8217;s first National Championship, UCLA made history in the 2026 WNBA Draft as the first team to have five first-round selections, and the first with six players selected in one draft. Lauren Betts (No. 4), Gabriela Jaquez (No. 5) and Kiki Rice (No. 6) were taken in a three-pick run, with Gianna Kneepkens (No. 15) closing out the First Round and Charlise Leger-Walker (No. 18) rounding out the Lady Bruins&#8217; six selections in the Second Round.
In 2002, UConn produced four first-round picks when Sue Bird led four Huskies selected with the first six picks in the draft – Bird (No. 1, Seattle), Swin Cash (No. 2, Detroit), Asjha Jones (No. 4, Washington) and Tamika Williams (No. 6, Minnesota).

With the WNBA Draft being held just days after the conclusion of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, prospects have a chance to pull off an incredible double – finish their collegiate career by winning the NCAA national championship, then begin their professional career as the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

WNBA Champion, MVP, 10-Time All-Star, 8-Time All-WNBA and 7-Time All-WNBA Defender Returns to L.A.

The Los Angeles Sparks have signed WNBA and franchise legend Nneka Ogwumike, returning the forward to Los Angeles for her 13th season in purple and gold. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Nneka is a champion in every sense, through her play, leadership and the standard she sets every day,” said Sparks General Manager Raegan Pebley. “Her consistency and impact on winning have defined her career, and her influence extends far beyond the court. She is one of the most impactful players in the history of this league, and we’re proud to welcome her back to Los Angeles, where her legacy will continue to grow.”
Drafted first overall by the Sparks in 2012, Ogwumike won Rookie of the Year and led the team to a 24-10 record, a nine-win improvement from the previous season. In 2016, Ogwumike was named Most Valuable Player after averaging 19.7 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists, all career highs, while shooting a blistering 66.5% from the floor, the second-highest percentage in league history. Her 61.5% figure from deep remains the best in a WNBA season on a minimum of 25 attempts. The star forward hit the game-winning shot with 3.1 seconds left in Game 5 of the Finals that year to deliver the Sparks’ third and most recent WNBA championship, the organization’s first in 14 years.
Last season with the Storm, Ogwumike earned her 10th All-Star selection, tying her for third-most in WNBA history with Tamika Catchings and Brittney Griner, behind only Sue Bird (13) and Diana Taurasi (11). She finished the campaign second in field goals made, behind only current teammate Dearica Hamby. Ogwumike has also been named to eight All-WNBA teams, including capturing First Team distinction during her 2016 MVP and championship-winning campaign. Ogwumike’s seven All-Defensive Team selections are tied for fourth-most in league history after Tamika Catchings, Sylvia Fowles and fellow Spark Alana Beard. Four of her seven All-Defensive nods have been of the First Team variety.
In 2021, Ogwumike received WNBA 25th Anniversary Team honors, celebrating her status as one of the best players in league history. Ogwumike ranks fifth on the league&#8217;s all-time steals list, stands sixth in scoring and defensive rebounds and is seventh in total rebounds and 10th in offensive boards. Over 436 career games (407 starts), the 6-foot-2 standout has averaged 16.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. Ogwumike, who is of Nigerian heritage, has shot 53.9% from the field, 36.8% from distance and 83.9% from the free-throw line in her W career. Her 115 double-doubles rank sixth all-time.
Ogwumike is the franchise leader in steals, field-goal percentage, true shooting percentage, offensive rating, offensive win shares and win shares. She ranks second in team annals in scoring, made field goals, offensive rebounds and minutes, third in defensive rebounds, made free throws and defensive win shares and fourth in blocks and defensive rating. Ogwumike stands seventh in assists as a Spark and ranks 10th on the franchise list in made three-pointers.
A passionate advocate for her fellow players and future generations of WNBA athletes, Ogwumike has served as president of the Women&#8217;s National Basketball Player Association since 2016. Known for her integrity and sportsmanship, the Stanford University alumna is the only WNBA player ever to win the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award four times, including three consecutive years as a Spark from 2019 to 2021. Off the court, the Texas-born star received the 2018 Seasonlong WNBA Cares Community Assist Award for her dedication to community outreach. A long-time pillar in the Los Angeles community and beyond, Ogwumike has championed female empowerment, health and wellness, diversity and inclusion, homelessness and STEM education.

NEW YORK, Oct. 10, 2025 – Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson, the 2025 Kia WNBA Most Valuable Player and Kia WNBA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier have been unanimously selected to the 2025 All-WNBA First Team, the WNBA announced today.
Wilson and Collier, the runner-up for the 2025 Kia WNBA Most Valuable Player Award, were named to the All-WNBA First Team on all 72 ballots in voting by a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Wilson earned a spot on the First Team for the fourth consecutive season and is an All-WNBA pick for the sifth time overall. Collier, a four-time All-WNBA Team selection, was voted to the First Team for the third straight season.
Joining Wilson and Collier (360 points each) on the 2025 All-WNBA First Team are Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas (358), Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray (341) and Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (320).
This is the fourth All-WNBA Team selection for Thomas, who makes her third consecutive appearance on the First Team. Gray and Mitchell are All-WNBA Team selections for the first time.
The 2025 All-WNBA Second Team consists of Seattle Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike (185 points), Aces guard Jackie Young (148), Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu (125), Fever center Aliyah Boston (112) and Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers (112).
Ogwumike is an All-WNBA Team choice for the eighth time, Ionescu for the fourth time and Young for the second time. Boston makes her debut on the All-WNBA Team. Bueckers’ selection marks the second straight season a rookie was selected to the All-WNBA Team (Indiana’s Caitlin Clark was a First Team choice in 2024).
Voting for the All-WNBA Team was conducted at the conclusion of the regular season. Players were selected without regard to position and received five points for each First Team vote and three points for each Second Team vote.
2025 All-WNBA First Team 
A’ja Wilson, Aces: In her eighth WNBA season, Wilson earned a record fourth Kia WNBA MVP Award – her second consecutive MVP honor – and was a co-winner of the Kia WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Award along with Minnesota’s Alanna Smith. The 6-4 Wilson averaged 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.3 blocked shots and 1.6 steals – all the second-best per-game marks of her career. She led the league in points per game for the second straight season and in blocks per game for the fifth time. Wilson also scored the most points (937) and had the highest efficiency rating (29.2) in the WNBA.
Napheesa Collier, Lynx: Collier, the runner-up to Wilson as the Kia WNBA MVP in 2024 and 2025, was the Kia WNBA Western Conference Player of the Month for May, June and July. She was selected to the WNBA All-Defensive Team for the fourth time. The 6-1 forward ranked second in the league in scoring with a career-high 22.9 points per game. In addition, Collier ranked 11th in rebounds per game (7.3) and third in steals per game (1.6). Behind Collier, the Lynx finished the regular season with the league’s best record (34-10).
Alyssa Thomas, Mercury: The 6-2 Thomas finished third in voting for the Kia WNBA MVP Award after setting a WNBA regular-season record with eight triple-doubles, extending her WNBA career-leading mark to 19. In addition, Thomas led the league in assists per game (9.2) and recorded a league record for total assists (357). She also finished third in the league in rebounds per game (8.8). Thomas was selected to the WNBA All-Defensive Team for the seventh time.
Allisha Gray, Dream: In her ninth WNBA season, Gray earned her third straight All-Star selection and was an All-Star starter for the first time. The 6-0 guard was named the Kia WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month for May, June and August and finished fourth in voting for the Kia WNBA MVP Award. Gray ranked seventh in the league in scoring with a career-high 18.4 points per game. She also set career highs in rebounds (5.3) and assists per game (3.5) and ranked sixth in the WNBA in three-point field goals made (98).
Kelsey Mitchell, Fever: Mitchell ranked third in the WNBA in scoring with a career-high 20.2 points per game and made a league-leading 111 three-point field goals. In her eighth WNBA season, Mitchell was an All-Star selection for the third consecutive season and finished fifth in the voting for the Kia WNBA MVP Award. The 6-0 guard also contributed 3.4 assists per game.
2025 All-WNBA Second Team 
Nneka Ogwumike, Storm: In her 14th WNBA season, Ogwumike started all 44 regular season games and earned her 10th All-Star selection. The 6-2 forward ranked ninth in the WNBA in points per game (18.3), 13th in rebounds per game (7.0) and 11th in field goal percentage (51.9). Ogwumike also became the sixth player in league history to reach 7,000 career points and the only one to do so while shooting at least 50 percent from the field.
Jackie Young, Aces: The No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm and a two-time WNBA champion with Las Vegas, Young was an All-Star selection for the fourth season in a row. The 6-0 guard finished 12th in the league in scoring (16.5 points per game) and 11th in assists (5.1 apg), ranking second among Aces players in both categories while posting the second-best figure of her career in each.
Sabrina Ionescu, Liberty: The 5-11 guard ranked 10th in the WNBA in points per game (18.2) and sixth in assists per game (5.7). She also led the league in free throw percentage (93.3) and finished ninth in three-point field goals made (81). In addition, she contributed 4.9 rebounds and a career-high 1.3 steals per game. In her sixth WNBA season, Ionescu was selected as an All-Star for the fourth consecutive season.
Aliyah Boston, Fever: The unanimous 2023 Kia WNBA Rookie of the Year and an All-Star in all of her three WNBA seasons, Boston helped lead the Fever to a spot in the WNBA Semifinals and was named to the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team. The 6-5 center-forward averaged career highs of 15.0 points and 3.7 assists per game. She finished sixth among WNBA players in rebounds per game (8.2), fourth in total rebounds (361) and fifth in field goal percentage (53.8).
Paige Bueckers, Wings: The 2025 Kia WNBA Rookie of the Year led all rookies in total points (692), points per game (19.2), total assists (194) and assists per game (5.4). Among all players, Bueckers ranked fifth in scoring average, sixth in steals per game (1.6) and ninth in assists per game. The 6-0 guard, who was voted as a starter for the 2025 AT&amp;T WNBA All-Star Game, set a WNBA single-game scoring record for rookies with 44 points at the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 20.
In honor of their accomplishments, each member of the All-WNBA First Team will receive $10,300 and each member of the Second Team will receive $5,150.

A’ja Wilson and Napheesa Collier Unanimously Selected to 2025 All-WNBA First Team

NEW YORK, Sept. 22, 2025 – Seattle Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike has been named the recipient of the 2025 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, the WNBA announced today. Ogwumike becomes the first player in league history to win the award four times, having previously earned the honor in three consecutive seasons from 2019 to 2021.
The Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award is presented each season to a player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, including ethical behavior, fair play and integrity. The award is named in honor of the late Kim Perrot, who helped the Houston Comets win WNBA championships in 1997 and 1998 in the league’s first two seasons before passing away in August 1999 after a seven-month battle with cancer.
Ogwumike received 18 votes from a national panel of 72 sportswriters and broadcasters. Connecticut Sun rookie guard Saniya Rivers finished in second with 11 votes, while Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier and Golden State Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton tied for third with seven votes each. Chicago Sky guard Rachel Banham and Atlanta Dream forward Naz Hillmon each received six votes.
In her 14th WNBA season, Ogwumike averaged 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. She started all 44 games for Seattle and led the Storm in both points and rebounds per game. Ogwumike set a career high with 803 total points and became the first player in Storm history to record 40 double-digit scoring games in a single season.
Ogwumike also continued to climb league charts, moving to fifth all time in steals (668) and becoming the sixth-leading scorer in WNBA history. She is the first player ever to surpass 7,000 career points while shooting at least 50 percent from the field. A 10-time AT&amp;T WNBA All-Star, Ogwumike was named the Kia WNBA Most Valuable Player in 2016 and the Kia WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2012.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A’ja Wilson scored 38 points to tie a playoff career high, <a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://x.com/LVAces/status/1968885139502420165" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-gtm-enhancement-style="LinkEnhancementA">Jackie Young had a go-ahead follow shot with 12.4 seconds left</a> and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Seattle Storm 74-73 on Thursday night to secure a spot in the WNBA semifinals.
Wilson, who had 25 points in the second half, had a layup roll off the rim with 25 seconds left and <a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://x.com/espn/status/1968884610193903826" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-gtm-enhancement-style="LinkEnhancementA">Erica Wheeler raced the other way</a> on a 2-on-1 break with Skylar Diggins. Wheeler pulled up in the lane to sink a jumper to give Seattle a 73-72 lead with 18 seconds remaining.
Wilson missed another shot, but Young was there for the putback. After a timeout to get to midcourt, Wheeler had a good look from the free throw line that hit off the back rim and Seattle could not get off another shot before the buzzer.
Las Vegas secured its seventh consecutive semifinal appearance. The second-seeded Aces advance to play on Sunday against No. 6 <a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://apnews.com/article/fever-dream-score-6f4823e740c39c107689b3487377633a" data-gtm-enhancement-style="LinkEnhancementA">Indiana, which eliminated Atlanta earlier</a>.
Young finished with 14 points and Chelsea Gray had 12 points and eight assists for Las Vegas. Wilson, who was 14 of 26 from the field and 10 of 11 at the line, scored 30-plus points in a playoff game for the sixth time in her career — tied for the second-most in WNBA history.
