Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard are going into the Basketball Hall of Fame later this year, not once but twice. And LeBron James and Chris Paul are part of the group that’s headed to the Hall as well, even before their playing careers end.
Anthony and Howard were announced Saturday as members of the Class of 2025, as was the 2008 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team that they played on — dubbed the “Redeem Team,” the one that captured gold at the Beijing Games and started a still-going run of five consecutive Olympic titles and counting for USA Basketball’s men’s program.
Also selected for enshrinement: WNBA greats Sue Bird, Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles, Chicago Bulls coach and two-time NCAA champion Billy Donovan, Miami Heat managing general partner Micky Arison and longtime NBA referee Danny Crawford.
Enshrinement weekend is Sept. 5-6 at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, and the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
“When the call comes and in my case, I saw Springfield on the phone,” Anthony said on the televised announcement. “You know what time it is Springfield is on the phone. You know who it is. You get the phone call and you hear, ‘You’re in.’ And I think for me, it was a burden off of my shoulders.”
Donovan won back-to-back titles as a college coach with Florida. Arison oversaw Miami’s path to NBA titles in 2006, 2012 and 2013. Crawford worked NBA games for 32 seasons and was picked to work the NBA Finals in 23 of those years.
“For some, this is an individual honor,” Arison said. “But for me, this speaks to what our entire Heat family — players, coaches, staff and fans — have built together.”
The Redeem Team’s selection means that Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Jason Kidd and Kobe Bryant — already enshrined as Hall of Famers — essentially now go in for a second time. James and Paul, who are obviously both locks to get into the Hall after they retire, also played for that Olympic team, as did Michael Redd, Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams and Tayshaun Prince.
The Redeem Team had that moniker because it was the team tasked with restoring USA Basketball’s place atop the world stage, after the 2004 Olympic team only managed a bronze medal at the Athens Games. The Redeem Team went 8-0 in Beijing, winning those games by an average of 27.9 points.
“USA Basketball is thrilled to see the 2008 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame,” USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said. “The Redeem Team’s celebrated run in Beijing marks a pivotal moment in U.S. men’s Olympic basketball history and has propelled us to five straight gold medals.”
UConn’s women’s program already had coach Geno Auriemma, Swin Cash (enshrined as a player) and Rebecca Lobo (enshrined as a contributor) in the Hall of Fame, and Bird and Moore going in together will obviously add to what’s always a huge weekend in New England.
“They’re hall of famers for me, they’re hall of famers for their family, they’re hall of famers for everybody — they’re even hall of famers for UConn haters,” Auriemma said. “That’s one thing they can all agree on.”

Even in the earliest days of building her brand, Wallace knew she wanted to get WNBA players on t-shirts. &#8220;But, I wanted to do it differently than what might already exist or what things might exist on the men&#8217;s side,&#8221; explains Wallace, &#8220;I was thinking to myself like, &#8216;how can I make it a little bit different and more unique?'&#8221; Driven by her desire for authenticity, Wallace uses her on-court experience to figure out designs that players will love to wear and that the fans can rock while celebrating their favorite athletes.
Announcing new drops across Instagram and Twitter, Playa Society&#8217;s apparel is notorious for quickly selling out, proving a strong demand for merchandise highlighting women&#8217;s basketball. Spotting a Playa Society piece in the wild is a way to spot another fan of the W; &#8220;We want people to feel like it&#8217;s uniform, and if you&#8217;re wearing Playa Society, we&#8217;re all on the same team,&#8221; says Wallace. Speaking to Wallace earlier this month, this interview explores how playing basketball informs her approach to sketching new designs and growing her business.

Kirsten Chen: Where does the name Playa Society come from? 
Esther Wallace: When I started, the only thing I knew for certain was that I wanted to create something that would benefit players– all women, across all sports– and the ethos of this brand to be players first. I also wanted it to feel like something that was communal and belonged to the community of players, fans, and more and us. So, &#8216;society&#8217; is rooted in that community vibe, then I was also influenced by the line from Love and Basketball, where Monica says, &#8220;cause I&#8217;m a ball player.&#8221;
KC: Tell me more about your relationship with fashion while growing up. 
EW: Fashion and design came way before basketball. I probably started drawing and sketching in elementary school, and by the 5th grade, I knew I wanted to be in the world of fashion, whether as a designer or to work for a big design company. I had a sketchbook full of dresses, different looks, designs, and sketches throughout elementary school. I&#8217;d walk around with it and draw all the time.
KC: Was there a specific moment when you realized the connection between basketball and fashion? 
EW: I think the moment came in college when one of my assistant coaches was looking through the catalogs. She was looking to choose our travel gear and sneakers for the season. She had two catalogs on her desk; one said women&#8217;s basketball, and the other said basketball, so I remember having a conversation with her like, &#8216;Why is there a difference? Why doesn&#8217;t it say men&#8217;s basketball and women&#8217;s basketball?&#8217; Having that conversation was initially what made me think about the world of apparel and fashion as it relates to sports, as it relates to basketball, as it relates to women, and all of those things.

KC: Moving to your t-shirts, especially those with multiple portraits of <a href="https://www.playasociety.com/products/wnba-aja-wilson-mvp-dpoy-t-shirt">A&#8217;ja Wilson</a> or <a href="https://www.playasociety.com/products/candace-parker-blueprint-t-shirt">Candace Parker</a>, can you describe the process of creating those designs? 
EW: Probably like October of 2021 was when I was thinking about it. I started drawing on an iPad for the first time in November 2021. I had to teach myself how to use the iPad and sketch in that way. It was really like an early trial and error. I was perfecting– I think I started with the Candace Parker portrait, and I must have drawn it at least 20 times. It took a while for me to be satisfied and say, &#8216;This finally looks really good. This looks like Candace; now let&#8217;s see if we can get it onto a t-shirt.&#8217; Then, it came like sampling and working with production to get it onto a t-shirt in a way that would still look like the sketch itself.
KC: What kind of music do you listen to while you&#8217;re working on your clothing designs? 
EW: It depends. If I&#8217;m in the concept phase, like still trying to figure out what exactly I wanna create, I literally have to be in complete silence. I can&#8217;t have any noise at all. But, um, if I&#8217;m in the execution phase and I know that I&#8217;m sketching Candace Parker or Sylvia Fowles, then I have to have background noise. I still only listen to music from the &#8217;90s or the early 2000s, a lot of rap music from those times. Or I&#8217;ll throw on Netflix and have something that&#8217;s not a distraction playing in the background.
KC: When you&#8217;re in the conceptualization phase, where do you get inspiration for your brand? Is it more basketball-related media or streetwear and fashion? 
EW: It&#8217;s a little bit of everything. I try to consume as much as I can from music, sports, basketball, and from the athletes themselves. When I feel locked in, it usually comes from the personal connection I can make to one of those areas. I&#8217;m a firm believer that it&#8217;s really just tapping into the experiences and authenticity that already exist and not necessarily looking outside of those places right now.

KC: What&#8217;s the most challenging part of being an entrepreneur and running your own brand? 
EW: Working in this space, with apparel and product, is really, really hard. The most challenging thing is just time. It always seems like there&#8217;s never time to put out all the things that we want to do. When I started working with the WNBA, Playa Society was a team of one, and it was just me. Now we&#8217;re a team with two full-time people and one part-time person and growing. But, it&#8217;s a matter of how much time I have to design and allocate toward growing the business. That&#8217;s a big challenge, building a team and doing it sustainably in a way where we can keep up with it.
KC: Looking to the future, what do you think needs to happen for WNBA merchandise to become as mainstream as other sports merchandise? 
EW: For us as a brand, we&#8217;re still trying to get our feet under us as far as making sure the supply chain goes right. I think what needs to happen for WNBA merch is for there to be more accessibility and availability so that it ties directly to the supply chain.
And I think there needs to be more people in women&#8217;s sports&#8211; like if we take notes from what&#8217;s happening in women&#8217;s sports media, right? You see more women creating their own platforms to talk about women&#8217;s sports. I think similarly in the merch world, and Playa Society creates the platform and opportunity to create products for women&#8217;s sports. And supply chain is a big piece of that. You can only kind of create what you have access to create.

KC: While building your brand for the last five years, was there a moment when you were starstruck or realized how big Playa Society has grown? 
It happens all the time, I spend so much time with my head down on the computer or in my sketchbook, and I feel like I don&#8217;t always get to, like, look up and actually see what&#8217;s going on. Obviously when Candace Parker wore the female athlete t-shirt, which was the first thing that ever happened for Playa Society during year one. That was huge.
And this past year, when we went to WNBA All-Star, and we sold out in Chicago after planning a popup in five days. Also, I was on the court when the All-Star game ended. After having such a phenomenal final All-Star game and dunking, Sylvia Fowles saw me and immediately came up to me, hugged me, and said thank you for making her retirement t-shirt. That&#8217;s when I felt like, &#8216;Wow, we really are doing the work, and the players appreciated it,&#8217; so we&#8217;re basically fulfilling the brand&#8217;s purpose.
When is your restock happening? 
We just restocked our Black History Month t-shirt and are planning some completely new designs for the upcoming WNBA season. We&#8217;ll have some college things coming out in March&#8211; a popup during the Final Four&#8211;to bridge further the gap between women&#8217;s college basketball and the WNBA as well.

NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2022 – Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson, the 2022 Kia WNBA Most Valuable Player, and Seattle Storm forward Breanna Stewart have been unanimously selected to the 2022 All-WNBA First Team, the WNBA announced today.
Wilson and Stewart were named to the All-WNBA First Team on all 56 ballots in voting by a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Wilson, an All-WNBA Team selection for the third time in her career and the third consecutive season, earned a spot on the First Team for the second time (also in 2020). Stewart, a five-time All-WNBA Team selection, was named to the First Team for the third consecutive season and the fourth time overall.
Joining Wilson and Stewart (280 points each) on the 2022 All-WNBA First Team are Aces guard Kelsey Plum (265), Phoenix Mercury guard Skylar Diggins-Smith (183) and Chicago Sky center-forward Candace Parker (183).
This is the 10th All-WNBA Team selection for Parker and the sixth for Diggins-Smith. Parker was voted to the First Team for the seventh time and Diggins-Smith for the fourth time. For Plum, this is her first selection to the All-WNBA Team.
The 2022 All-WNBA Second Team consists of Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas (175 points), New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu (168), Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike (141), Sun forward Jonquel Jones (126) and Minnesota Lynx center Sylvia Fowles (65).
Fowles is an All-WNBA Team choice for the eighth time, Ogwumike for the fifth time and Jones for the fourth time. Ionescu and Thomas are All-WNBA Team honorees for the first time.
Voting for the All-WNBA Team was conducted at the conclusion of the regular season. For the first time, players were selected without regard for position. Players received five points for each First Team vote and three points for each Second Team vote.
2022 All-WNBA First Team
A’ja Wilson, Aces: The 6-4 Wilson became the seventh player to win the Kia WNBA MVP Award multiple times (also in 2020). She also was named the 2022 Kia WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. Wilson is the fifth player to win the WNBA MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season and the first to do so since Lauren Jackson in 2007. In her fifth WNBA season, Wilson ranked fifth in the league in scoring (19.5 ppg), second in rebounding (9.4 rpg) and first in blocks (1.94 bpg) and double-doubles (17).
Breanna Stewart, Storm: The 2018 Kia WNBA MVP finished in second place in voting for the Kia WNBA MVP Award behind Wilson. In her sixth WNBA season, the 6-4 Stewart led the league in scoring (21.8 ppg) and ranked seventh in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and tied for fifth in steals (1.59 spg). Her 11 games of at least 25 points paced all WNBA players and her four games of at least 30 points were second to Ionescu.
Kelsey Plum, Aces: The 5-8 Plum finished in third place in voting for the Kia WNBA MVP Award after averaging career highs of 20.2 points (second in the WNBA) and 5.1 assists (ninth). A first-time WNBA All-Star selection, Plum led the league in three-pointers made (113) and was fourth in three-point field goal percentage (42.0).
Skylar Diggins-Smith, Mercury: In her ninth WNBA season, the 5-9 Diggins-Smith averaged 19.7 points (third in the WNBA), the second-highest output of her career and the highest since 2014 (20.1 ppg). She also averaged 5.5 assists (seventh in the WNBA) and 1.53 steals (eighth) while playing a league-high 34.0 minutes per game. Her 10 games with at least 25 points ranked second in the league behind Stewart.
Candace Parker, Sky: The two-time Kia WNBA MVP (2008, 2013) averaged 13.2 points, 8.6 rebounds (third in the WNBA) and 4.5 assists (11th). Parker recorded two triple-doubles this season, bringing her career total to three, which is tied with Ionescu for the most in league history. On May 22 against the Washington Mystics, the 36-year-old Parker became the oldest WNBA player to have a triple-double.
2022 All-WNBA Second Team
Alyssa Thomas, Sun: Thomas averaged 13.4 points, 8.2 rebounds (fifth in WNBA), a career-high 6.1 assists (fifth) and 1.72 steals (second). The 6-2 forward was named a WNBA All-Star for the third time and a WNBA All-Defensive Team selection for the fourth time.
Sabrina Ionescu, Liberty: A first-time WNBA All-Star, Ionescu became the first player in league history to record at least 500 points, 200 rebounds and 200 assists in a season. The 5-11 guard ranked eighth in the WNBA in scoring (17.4 ppg), 12th in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and third in assists (6.3 apg). Ionescu, 24, became the youngest player to ever have a triple-double (June 12 against Chicago) and the first player to post a triple-double with at least 30 points (July 6 against Las Vegas).
Nneka Ogwumike, Sparks: In her 11th WNBA season, Ogwumike averaged 18.1 points (seventh in the WNBA), 6.6 rebounds (15th) and 1.68 steals (third). The 2016 Kia WNBA MVP also finished seventh in the league in field goal percentage (54.4).
Jonquel Jones, Sun: The 2021 Kia WNBA MVP led the Sun in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots with averages of 14.6 points (17th in WNBA), 8.6 rebounds (fourth) and 1.15 blocks (seventh). The 6-6 Jones was selected to the WNBA All-Defensive Team for the third time.
Sylvia Fowles, Lynx: In her 15th and final WNBA season, Fowles averaged 14.4 points, a WNBA-high 9.8 rebounds and 1.20 blocks (sixth in WNBA). The 2017 Kia WNBA MVP earned All-Defensive Team honors for the 11th time, the second most in league history behind Tamika Catchings’ 12. Fowles also won the 2022 WNBA Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award.

In honor of their accomplishments, each member of the All-WNBA First Team will receive $10,300 and each member of the Second Team will receive $5,150.

NEW YORK, Aug. 19, 2022 – Minnesota Lynx center Sylvia Fowles has been named the recipient of the 2022 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, the WNBA announced today. Fowles is a first-time recipient of the award.
The Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award is presented each season to a player who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, including ethical behavior, fair play and integrity.  The award is named for the late Kim Perrot, who helped guide the Houston Comets to their first two WNBA championships before passing away in August 1999 after a seven-month battle with cancer.
Fowles, who earns the honor in the final season of her illustrious 15-year WNBA career, received 36 votes from a national panel of 56 sportswriters and broadcasters. Seattle Storm guard Brian January, also in her last season in the WNBA, finished second with eight votes. Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell and Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike, a three-time recipient of the award, each received three votes. Rounding out the voting were Washington Mystics forward Alysha Clark and Phoenix Mercury guard Shey Peddy, each of whom received two votes, and Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray and Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson with one vote each.
An iconic WNBA figure, Fowles concludes her career as the WNBA’s all-time regular-season leader in total rebounds (4,006) and field goal percentage (.599). A two-time WNBA Champion, four-time Kia WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, seven-time All-WNBA selection, seven-time WNBA All-Star, and four-time Olympic gold medalist, she also was named to The W25 in 2021 when the league honored its top 25 WNBA players of all time during the league’s 25th season.
Admired not just for her on-court accomplishments and leadership, Fowles also has made her mark in the communities in which she has lived as a student, mentor, founder, and spokesperson who inspires young women and men, and consistently gives back. Fowles founded the Sylvia Fowles Family Fund in 2010 to help children in need in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Chicago and Miami and is a spokesperson for the Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), an endeavor close to her heart as she has two nephews afflicted by epilepsy.
