PHOENIX (AP) — Arike Ogunbowale scored 22 points, Marina Mabrey added 14 and the Dallas Wings beat the Phoenix Mercury 85-81 on Tuesday night.
Mabrey scored on a driving layup with 11.1 seconds left and Ogunbowale added a pair of free throws with 6.9 seconds, each time extending the Wings (4-5) to a four-point lead.
Satou Sabally added 11 points and capped an 11-2 Dallas run with a 3-pointer that made it 81-70 with 1:41 left. But the Mercury (5-4) scored nine straight over the next 1:11 with Skylar Diggins-Smith scoring five and Brittney Griner adding four during the run.
Griner tied her season highs with 27 points and 16 rebounds, Diggins-Smith scored 22 for her fourth straight 20-point game, and Megan Walker added 10 points.
The Dallas reserves outscored Phoenix’s bench 41-10.
Dallas will stay in Phoenix for a rematch with the Mercury on Friday night.

CHICAGO &#8212; — (AP) Kia Nurse sank a 3-pointer a step inside the half-court line as time expired and the Phoenix Mercury closed the game on a 14-3 run to beat the Chicago Sky 84-83 on Tuesday night.
Phoenix trailed 80-70 with 3:37 to play, but Chicago would not make another field goal the rest of the way.
Megan Walker made two free throws with 29.9 seconds left to pull Phoenix within 83-80, and Kahleah Copper had a shot roll off the rim at the other end. Nurse grabbed the rebound, dribbled down the court and eluded a defender at midcourt for an open look from distance. Nurse went to her knees as her teammates rushed in to celebrate.
&#8220;Brianna Turner told me to shoot it, I never make the half-court shot, thank God this one went in,&#8221; Nurse said.
Skylar Diggins-Smith led Phoenix (4-3) with 24 points and Nurse finished with 18 points on five 3-pointers. Brittney Griner and Turner each added 13 points and Walker scored 10.
Diamond DeShields scored 26 points for Chicago (2-5), which lost its fifth straight game. Courtney Vandersloot had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Ruthy Hebard had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Chicago went on a 12-0 run in the fourth as Phoenix was limited to five points in the first five minutes of the quarter.

NEW YORK – February 10, 2021– The New York Liberty announced today that the team has acquired three-time WNBA Champion Natasha Howard and two-time champion Sami Whitcomb from the Seattle Storm in separate trade transactions. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Three trades in total were executed between three teams to bring Howard and Whitcomb to the Big Apple.

The WNBA’s 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, Natasha Howard (29) is a 6-2 forward who is entering her eighth WNBA season. Howard was drafted by the Indiana Fever in 2014 where she spent two seasons, followed by two years with the Minnesota Lynx. Howard won her first WNBA Championship (2017) alongside Liberty Head Coach Walt Hopkins in Minnesota. During her three-year tenure with the Seattle Storm, Howard secured two additional WNBA Championships (2018, 2020).
“I am very excited to be a part of the New York Liberty organization,” said Howard. “I’m also excited to meet my new teammates and the fans. I’m so pumped about the 2021 season.”
In the 2020 Championship season, Howard averaged 9.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 53.0% from the field during the regular season. The Toledo, Ohio, native has garnered several awards including: 
• 2018 WNBA Most Improved Player 
• 2019 WNBA All-Star starting selection 
• 2019 All-WNBA First Team honors 
• 2019 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. 
Whitcomb (32), a 5-10 guard, joins the Liberty after a four-year tenure in Seattle where she helped the Storm to two WNBA titles. In Seattle’s 2020 championship season, Whitcomb averaged 8.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 38.1% from three, 44.3% from the field and 100% at the free throw line (22-22). The Ventura, Calif. native signed as a free agent with the Storm in 2017 after competing professionally overseas for several seasons, most notably in Australia’s WNBL.
“I’m really looking forward to this new opportunity to play alongside this talented group they’re putting together,” said Whitcomb. “I’m excited to be a part of this organization’s next chapter under Walt and his staff as they grow this new culture. Can’t wait to get to New York!”
Kolb added, “Sami Whitcomb will be an instant fan favorite, not only for her elite shot making ability, but also for her tenacity and drive. A two-time champion in her own right, Sami knows what it takes to win in this league, and is exactly the kind of tough, talented, culture-first player we covet in New York.” 
Nurse, the Liberty’s 10th overall selection in the 2018 WNBA Draft, averaged 11.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game over 89 contests (59 starts) during her three-year tenure with New York. Kia was voted a starter in the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game, and led the Liberty in points per game over the past two seasons.
Walker, New York’s 9th overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, saw action in 18 games during her rookie campaign. She averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
“I would like to thank Kia Nurse and Megan Walker for their contributions to our organization,” added Kolb. “The unfortunate part of transactions such as these is that you have to say goodbye to people who have contributed to the team in so many ways. 
Kia shone particularly brightly in New York, becoming an All-Star in just her second season in the league. Megan’s rookie season was undoubtedly stunted by a preseason COVID diagnosis, but I have no doubt that she will return to top form in the coming years, and that both players will continue to flourish in Phoenix.”
Talbot, who the Liberty acquired via trade during the 2020 WNBA Draft from the Minnesota Lynx, opted out of the 2020 season with New York. In 2019, her third WNBA season and first with Minnesota, the Australia-native averaged 5.2 points and 2.4 rebounds over 33 games. Talbot was recently named the WNBL’s 2020 Most Valuable Player.
The New York Liberty currently hold overall picks 6, 25 and 29 in the 2021 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm®. The WNBA has not yet announced a date for the event.

The 6-1 wing led the Huskies in scoring, posted career-best numbers across the board and shot the lights out from beyond the arc. Her 45.1% three-point shooting ranked eighth in all of Division I women’s hoops. Walker has been sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19, but is expected to join the Liberty in Florida.</li>

Amanda Zahui B

<li>Zahui B put up career-best numbers across the board in 2019 – her fifth season in the league and fourth with the Liberty. She continues to expand her range beyond the 3-point line as she made 22 treys in 24 games last season. She finished second to Charles in rebounding, but steps into the lead role in controlling the glass for the Liberty.</li>

Layshia Clarendon
<ul>
<li>2019 Stats (Connecticut): 9 GP, 15.3 MPG, 6.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.3 SPG, 41.9 FG%</li>
<li>Clarendon’s 2019 season was derailed by a freak practice injury. What initially appeared to be an ankle sprain after stepping on a teammates foot, ended up requiring season-ending surgery. The veteran point guard, a 2017 All-Star in Atlanta, will bring some much-needed experience to a young Liberty squad.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Three Questions</h3>
1. How seamlessly does Sabrina Ionescu’s game translate to the WNBA?
Ionescu would have likely been the No. 1 pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft had she chosen to make the leap to the pros after her junior season. Instead she returned to Oregon for one last run at the NCAA title – something that was taken off the table by COVID-19. Her game has been pro-ready for years and she already has a confidence and swagger of a veteran rather than a rookie.
Ionescu is both an elite scorer and facilitator and has a great basketball IQ to know when it’s time to call her own number and when it’s time to create for her teammates and let them shine. She thrives in the pick and roll and has the ability to score at all three levels – driving to the basket, pulling up in the mid-range or stepping back and launching from distance.
2. What can be expected of a team with seven rookies and a new head coach?
The last two seasons have seen the Liberty post their two lowest win totals in franchise history. In addition to making a coaching change (Walt Hopkins replaces Katie Smith), the Liberty also lost their franchise player (Tina Charles) and last year’s lottery pick (Asia Durr) is sitting out the 2020 season.
The Liberty enter the 2020 season with the youngest team in the WNBA as their roster includes seven rookies and only one player with more than five years of experience at this level. While there is excitement for the debut of Ionescu, this team won’t be burdened by lofty expectations. This will give the young players on this team a chance to get playing time and prove that they belong in this league.
Playing on a single campus could favor a team full of rookies as it closely emulates a combination of college dorm life and AAU Tournaments with all of the top teams coming to a single place to play.
3. Which rookies take advantage of this opportunity?
It’s almost unheard of for a team to enter a season with more than half of their roster being rookies, but that is where the Liberty find themselves in 2020. In addition to Ionescu and Walker, the Liberty have Jocelyn Willoughby, Jazmine Jones, Kylee Shook and Leaonna Odom – all taken in the first 15 picks of the 2020 Draft – on their roster heading into the season opener this weekend.

With five players opting out of participating in the 2020 season – either remaining overseas or in the U.S. – there will be ample playing time and opportunity for these young players to prove themselves in the best women’s basketball league in the world.
With only 144 jobs available, its often tough for many rookies to even make a team, let alone get meaningful playing time in their first year. It will be interesting to see which of the Liberty rookies can take advantage of this situation and propel themselves into a long-term career – whether it is with the Liberty or with another team that is impressed by their play.
