The Connecticut Sun&#8217;s retooling roster will be noteworthy to track as free agency continues to unfold, but the revamp and reconstruction of its staff has gone under the radar. Sun President Jenn Rizzotti, a former W player herself, has noticeably prioritized players&#8217; requests for more former players on the bench and staff.
Hiring Stephanie White as Head Coach and a former player was intentional to a degree, as Rizzotti puts it. As soon as she knew White was available, she made the call.
“Jenn told me how important it was for the players to have former players on staff. And I got that. They wanted to know that we (coaches) have been in their shoes and their situation,” says White.
White understands the grind of the W. She can appreciate the nuances of the league and the perspectives of players, as she played for the Charlotte Sting and Indiana Fever over a five-year professional career from 1999-2004.
She coached the Indiana Fever to a Finals appearance in 2015, her first year as a head coach, after a decade of collegiate and professional assistant stops, including becoming the first former W player to work as an assistant coach for the Fever.
White returned to the collegiate ranks as the Head Coach at Vanderbilt and continued her broadcasting career with ESPN. But, as much as she appreciates the college game, she missed the W.
Time off from coaching since she and Vanderbilt parted ways in 2021 was a necessary refresh.
“You get so focused in the micro and get tunnel vision at times as a coach,” says White.
Solely broadcasting allowed her to view the bigger picture, expand into the macro, and appreciate the nuance of what players and teams do well. There was less emphasis on the constant growth and improvement on the margins and more appreciation of what makes the game enjoyable.
It also made her miss coaching. She loves the practices and feels most at home in the gym. White didn’t know she wanted a career in coaching until she stepped onto a practice court as a coach for the very first time.
“When Jenn first reached out, I was so excited about the opportunity… There’s a window of opportunity right now with the roster and the players we have, and I’m looking forward to that challenge,” says White.
“It’s important for someone like me, who’s further removed from my playing days, to have younger coaches who can be a conduit and a buffer. It’s important to have former players who are mature enough to handle that in the coaching role but also understand how to communicate with both sides.”
That made some of White’s hires simple.
Briann January and Abi Olajuwon both played for White, January with the Fever, and Olajuwon with the Chicago Sky when White was an assistant. White also brought Olajuwon to the Fever’s training camp roster when she was Head Coach. White had remained in consistent contact with Olajuwon and January even when she wasn’t coaching them or coaching in the W at all.
White had even tried to bring January onto staff at Vanderbilt while January was still in the league.
January spent two seasons as an assistant at Arizona State, her alma mater, and found her love for coaching before she was even done playing. Ask anyone around the W who knows January, and her addition to a coaching staff just months after retiring as a player comes as no surprise.
As a former player for the Sun herself, January had a conversation with Rizzotti after she made the decision to move on in 2021.
“I hope this is a temporary thank you and goodbye,” said Rizzotti to January, &#8220;because I’d really like to have you back as a coach one day.”
Rizzotti came calling this fall and made good on her word.
“We kind of spoke it into existence,” laughs January. “I couldn’t ask for a better position to start my professional coaching career.”
January told Rizzotti straight up during that call in 2021 that she’d love to be back and ‘on her side again.’
Coming into the year with the added benefit of having played alongside this core group for two seasons, January serves as that sort of bridge between the roster and coaching staff. She has a special connection that few can hope to replicate.
“I feel I have an advantage in knowing what motivates them, how to make them their best selves and perform at their highest level,” says January.
January sees herself as a future Head Coach in the W and is eager to learn and grow in every facet as a coach. Her preparation as an athlete was unparalleled, as Rizzotti details, and multiple members of the staff echo that they already see that from January in staff meetings.
In speaking with January, it’s clear how her attention to detail which made her one of the great defenders of the last decade will mold her into one of the most promising coaching prospects. She pores over wanting to learn the Collective Bargaining Agreement inside out, asking questions about how each member of the front office does their job and understanding each player’s process.
Ushering in the next wave of former players into the ranks of coaching staffs and front offices is as important to the Sun as furthering synergy with the current roster. It’s all about balance and ‘pulling up’ players and new coaches from within.
“Mentorship’s just important (to White) as getting over the championship hump,” says Olajuwon.
Olajuwon has spent her last decade since retiring as a player getting into the collegiate coaching ranks, most recently with Texas Christian. Much like White, she also never expected to get into coaching but fell in love with the mentorship aspect. She found a further appreciation for her former coaches once she took her first job, a position with Cal State Fullerton in 2014.
She knows how hard it is to make it to the league and even more so how difficult it is to find staying power as one of 144.
“Abi played three years behind one of the best to ever do it collegiately in Courtney Paris (at Oklahoma). Paris got drafted, and then Abi made an immediate impact as a senior and wound up getting drafted herself,” says White.
Her colleagues describe a hungry worker, someone with a deep desire to learn more and more about the game, and a fantastic communicator.
“Anyone who is willing to put in the extra work and wants to be uncommon amongst the uncommon, I’m here for them,” says Olajuwon.
Across the board, the Sun are viewed as evolving. They have a competitive edge and window right now. They’re ready and excited to get to work.
“We have a young staff that’s filled with unique experience and a wealth of knowledge,” says January.
Rizzotti wanted to emphasize the possibilities that are open to players once their careers are over. She started coaching collegiately in 1999 when she was still playing for the Houston Comets at a time when it was uncommon to hold a coaching job simultaneously, a path further trailblazed by Dawn Staley.
This off-season has seen a wave of former W players re-enter the league in a non-playing capacity, and the Sun positioned themselves at the forefront.
“There are a lot of great people and women in the WNBA,” says Sun Assistant General Manager Morgan Tuck.
“Whether you come in as a coach, or player development, or on the front office side, it’s really appreciated that the league is buying into and seeing the value of players, not just as athletes.”
Tuck, who formerly played from 2016-2019, retired prior to the 2021 season due to recurring knee injuries. That led to a position with the Sun a few months later, becoming the Director of Franchise Development and operating primarily on the business side.
The transition out of playing and into post-professional life outside of being an athlete was difficult and overwhelming. Still, it was eased by working for an organization she’d already been a part of.
“I was nervous; I’d never worked in an office: What does working hard look like? How do I improve at my job,” says Tuck reminiscing.
After Darius Taylor’s hiring to be the new General Manager of the Sun, Tuck received a promotion to Assistant GM alongside her Franchise Development tag. Growing up, she loved the idea of being a GM. Watching the Miami Heat assemble and seeing Pat Riley at press conferences introducing the Heatles, Tuck thought that was the coolest possible job outside of playing.
She’s still learning on the fly as one of the younger execs in the league (Tuck won’t turn 29 until just before the season at the end of April), but she’s eager to keep growing in the job.
Tuck has known Taylor for nearly a decade, as he recruited her while he was an assistant coach under Dawn Staley at South Carolina. 
She’s already learned a great deal from Rizzotti over the past year, who helped out on the basketball side quite a bit last year as the Sun didn’t have an Assistant GM on staff.  
While this is a young staff, they have deep roots in basketball and in one another.
Using the momentum of last year, Connecticut has built a staff to be excited about immediately and for their future growth and development. 
Spurred on by a new wave of former players in all facets of the organization, the Sun is not seeking to ‘reinvent the wheel’ but to add some tweaks along the way as they broaden their horizons off of their strong foundation.

SEATTLE, Wash. — The Seattle Storm announced today the retirement of forward Morgan Tuck from the WNBA. A five-year WNBA veteran, Tuck was a member of back-to-back WNBA Finals teams, appearing in the Finals with the Connecticut Sun in 2019 and winning a championship with the Storm in 2020. 
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from the WNBA,” Tuck said. “I have tried everything physically possible to be ready for the upcoming 2021 WNBA season. Unfortunately, it will not be possible. This was a hard decision to make but I have to listen to what my body is telling me. I am glad that in my final season I was able to win a WNBA Championship with the Seattle Storm.”
“Playing the game has been a huge part of my life for so many years. Now that this chapter of my life has come to an end, I am ecstatic to explore the next chapter.”
The third overall pick in the 2016 WNBA draft, Tuck began her career in Connecticut. She was with the Sun for four seasons, making nine starts in 115 games. She was traded to the Storm for a first round pick ahead of the 2020 season.
“We want to thank Morgan for all of her contributions to women’s basketball including the 2020 Storm championship,” head coach Dan Hughes said. “She was a valuable teammate as well as a great ambassador of the game. We wish her all the best in her retirement and into a promising future.”
Tuck dealt with knee injuries throughout her career, missing parts of her sophomore season at the University of Connecticut and her rookie season in the WNBA, as well as the 2017 and 2020 seasons.
At UConn, Tuck won four consecutive national championships alongside Storm forward Breanna Stewart. As a senior, she earned WBCA All-American and Associated Press Second Team All-America honors.
Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tuck played high school basketball for Bolingbrook High School in Illinois. She was twice named Ms. Basketball for the state of Illinois, as a freshman and a senior. At the time, she was one of other three players (Cappie Pondexter, Candace Parker) to win the award twice.
Tuck finishes her WNBA career with 642 points, 273 rebounds, and 97 assists over five seasons.

It’s a new decade in the WNBA.
A <a href="https://www.wnba.com/news/wnba-and-wnbpa-reach-tentative-agreement-on-groundbreaking-eight-year-collective-bargaining-agreement/">new collective bargaining agreement</a> led to a new salary cap, which leads to many new scenarios for the league’s 12 teams as they prepare for the 2020 season. Let’s take a team-by-team look at the decision points that will make for a compelling couple of weeks. Teams began negotiating with players on January 28, but no contracts can officially be signed until February 10.
<h3>Atlanta:</h3>
The biggest story for the Dream during free agency will be what appears, right now, to be an amicable break-up with Angel McCoughtry, the player that has most defined this franchise. McCoughtry will be testing the free agent market for the first time in her WNBA career, which began in 2009, and where she lands could be one of the most interesting stories of the offseason. The 33-year-old, who has twice been the WNBA scoring champion, has missed two of the last three WNBA seasons.
<h3>Chicago:</h3>
The Sky, under now second-year head coach James Wade, have a lot of work to do and a lot of decisions to make with seven players hitting free agency this season, including the veteran backcourt duo of Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley, who are both unrestricted free agents. Center Stefanie Dolson (unrestricted) is unsigned, along with Jamierra Faulkner (restricted), Kayla Alexander (unrestricted), Kahleah Copper (restricted) and Astou Ndour (restricted). Dolson will be the biggest decision of the group, considering that experienced posts in the WNBA are coveted.

<h3>Connecticut:</h3>
The Sun undoubtedly believe they can make a run at the Finals again in 2020. But in order to do it, they are likely looking to lock up a majority of their 2019 roster. Veterans Layshia Clarendon and Shekinna Stricklen are both unrestricted free agents. Then there’s the group of restricted free agents, which includes Jonquel Jones, Courtney Williams, Morgan Tuck, Rachel Banham and Bria Holmes. Keeping this core group together, which has helped the Sun turn into one of the WNBA’s elite teams over the past three seasons, is going to be much harder heading into a new season.
<h3>Dallas:</h3>
It appears that Skylar Diggins-Smith may not be playing for the Dallas Wings when the 2020 season tips off. Diggins-Smith, despite being “cored” by the Wings after missing last season following the birth of her son, would like an opportunity to start fresh somewhere else. Giving Diggins-Smith the “core” designation gives Dallas the opportunity to make a sign-and-trade deal that would help the Wings build in a different direction, something that <a href="https://apnews.com/559739d64c2075fea2c6565c969813c8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dallas Wings President and CEO Greg Bibb told the AP is an option</a>. In addition, it would allow Dallas to focus their backcourt efforts on rising star Arike Ogunbowale, who had a fantastic rookie season while Diggins-Smith sat out on maternity leave. Not only do the Wings need to find a replacement for Diggins-Smith, they would likely want to re-sign forward Glory Johnson, who will be the foundation of their inside game.
<h3>Indiana:</h3>
New head coach Marianne Stanley and GM Tamika Catchings want to end a run of four seasons in which the Fever have failed to finish with a winning record. Stanley and Catchings have a stockpile of young talent that leaves them with a full roster, therefore little room for player movement, and the No. 3 pick in April’s draft. Guard Tiffany Mitchell is a restricted free agent and the most prominent player that isn’t under contract to start the season.
<h3>Las Vegas:</h3>
Bringing Liz Cambage back to Sin City is Bill Laimbeer’s No. 1 priority. Cambage is a restricted free agent, which means the Aces can match any offer and it’s hard to imagine that they won’t considering the impact she made for them last season alongside A’ja Wilson. With only half of its roster signed, the Aces might have a chance to make a free-agent splash and add depth inside and out. Another key free agent is Tamera Young, who was a versatile key to the Aces’ playoff run last year.

<h3>Los Angeles:</h3>
The retirement of Alana Beard means that the Sparks need to replace a stalwart defender and on-court leader. But the top priority is securing the services of restricted free agent and three-time All-Star Chelsea Gray. Gray has reportedly already received an offer from the Sparks so expect little drama there. Among the players who contributed big to the Sparks last season, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt is in the best position to replace the defensive presence of Beard on the floor. The Sparks are considered a potential destination for Diggins-Smith.
<h3>Minnesota:</h3>
Before free agency began, the Lynx <a href="https://lynx.wnba.com/news/statement-from-lynx-head-coach-and-general-manager-cheryl-reeve-on-maya-moore/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">learned that Maya Moore will sit out a second straight season</a>. On the bright side, Sylvia Fowles is signed, as is 2019 Rookie of the Year Napheesa Collier. Seimone Augustus is an unrestricted free agent and she indicated last season that the 2020 season would be her last as a professional basketball player. It’s hard to imagine her finishing her career anywhere other than Minnesota. Guard Danielle Robinson, the Lynx’s most dependable ball distributor last year, is also an unrestricted free agent.
<h3>New York:</h3>
The Liberty, under new head coach Walt Hopkins, have cored seven-time All-Star Tina Charles, who will be waiting patiently to find out who New York will pick with the No. 1 WNBA draft pick in April. New York has six players under contract for the season, including Asia Durr, last year&#8217;s No. 2 pick, and Kia Nurse, who is emerging as a star. The Liberty, however, have decisions to make about guard and unrestricted free agent Bria Hartley.
<h3>Phoenix:</h3>
After coring Brittney Griner for the first time in her career, the Mercury now turn their attention to the major matter of signing DeWanna Bonner, who is an unrestricted free agent and has already been cored the maximum four times in her 10-year career with the Mercury. Bonner moving on at least feels like a possibility, but Diana Taurasi’s health may have a lot to do with that decision. The Mercury, who were the oldest team in the WNBA last year, also need to make decisions about Essence Carson, who brought valuable versatility to the floor last season, and point guard Leilani Mitchell, who filled in for Diana Taurasi last season. Phoenix could also be in the running for a chance to trade for Diggins-Smith, who would complement Diana Taurasi in the backcourt.

<h3>Seattle:</h3>
Last season, the Storm missed two key players; Breanna Stewart due to an Achilles injury and Sue Bird due to knee surgery. The Storm have exclusive negotiating rights to Stewart while Bird is an unrestricted free agent. Bird, who will turn 40 in the fall, has settled into a life in Seattle with girlfriend Megan Rapinoe. It&#8217;s hard to imagine that Bird plays out the end of her career anywhere other than the Emerald City, particularly with Stewart back on the floor. The Storm also have decisions to make about veterans Courtney Paris and Shavonte Zellous, who played key roles in the Storm’s injury-plagued 2019 season.
<h3>Washington:</h3>
Mystics head coach Mike Thibault confirmed that the team has a verbal agreement to re-sign both Elena Delle Donne and Emma Meesseman, who are unrestricted free agents. Delle Donne, the 2019 MVP, <a href="https://mystics.wnba.com/news/mystics-medical-update/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">had a small surgical procedure on her back</a> late in January but is expected to be back in time for the start of the WNBA season. Aerial Powers, who has blossomed so nicely under Thibault, is back with the Mystics in 2020 thanks to an extension. Washington has more work to do assembling its roster a handful of free agents. Guard Kristi Toliver is one of those free agents, and it’s unclear whether they&#8217;ll be able to keep her.
