NEW YORK, July 14, 2023 – The WNBA is on record pace for viewership, attendance, digital consumption, and merchandise as the league heads into the 2023 AT&amp;T WNBA All-Game in Las Vegas, which will be held at Michelob ULTRA Arena, on Saturday, July 15 and airing on ABC at 5:30 p.m. PT (8:30 p.m. ET). As the league enters the midway point of its 27th season, the memorable performance of WNBA players on the court has led to viewership growth across its national television partners – ABC, CBS, ESPN, and ESPN2 – and double-digit growth for attendance and digital consumption over last year.
Highlights from the season so far include:
<ul>
<li>ON-THE-COURT: WNBA players continue to deliver record performances on the court, which include:</li>
<li>An explosion of 40-point games by players featuring seven this season through Sunday, July 9, more than twice the previous high of three which was accomplished in three different seasons. (Breanna Stewart 45 and 43; Rhyne Howard 43; DeWanna Bonner, Jewell Loyd and Arike Ogunbowale 41 each, and Kelsey Plum 40).</li>
<li>Howard became the second youngest player (23 years, 64 days) in WNBA history to score 40 or more points in a game, trailing only Candace Parker (40 points on July 9, 2008, at 22 years, 81 days). In the process, Howard also became the youngest WNBA player to record 40 or more points and at least five made three-point shots in a game.</li>
<li>Aliyah Boston became the eighth rookie selected to start the All-Star Game and the first since 2014 (Chamique Holdsclaw, 1999; Sue Bird and Tamika Catchings, 2002; Maya Moore, 2011; Elena Delle Donne and Brittney Griner, 2013; and Shoni Schimmel, 2014). She also was named the league’s Rookie of the Month in May and June.</li>
<li>Breanna Stewart became the fastest player to eclipse 4,000 career points.</li>
<li>Diana Taurasi, already the only WNBA player to eclipse the 8,000-point and 9,000-point plateaus, is nearing 10,000 career points. Entering the All-Star break, she has 9,914 and needs 86 more to reach 10,000.</li>

<li>VIEWERSHIP: Combined viewership for the WNBA across its national networks (ABC, CBS, ESPN, ESPN2) is up 67 percent over last year, averaging 556,184 viewers. Currently this season is pacing to be the most-watched regular season across the league’s networks in over 20 years (2002). Additional viewership highlights for this season include:</li>
<li>The Dallas Wings vs. the Los Angeles Sparks game on ABC was the most viewed game this season, averaging 733,000 viewers, on Sunday, June 25.</li>
<li>The Phoenix Mercury vs. the New York Liberty game on CBS was the most viewed game on CBS, averaging 694,000 viewers, on Sunday, June 18.</li>
<li>The Las Vegas Aces vs. the Seattle Storm on ABC was the most viewed opening weekend game on any network since 2012 averaging 684,000 viewers on Saturday, May 20.</li>
<li>The Phoenix Mercury vs. the Los Angeles Sparks game was the most-watched regular season game on cable in 24 years and the most-viewed opening day on ESPN network in 11 years, averaging 683,000 viewers on ESPN, on Friday, May 19.</li>

<li>ATTENDANCE: WNBA attendance is up 27 percent this season through the same number of games compared to last year with more than 787,000 fans attending 2023 regular season games this season. Currently, this season’s attendance is pacing to be the highest average attendance since 2018. Other highlights include:</li>
<li>The highest attended WNBA game this season marked the return of Britney Griner to Phoenix with 14,040 fans in attendance to see the Mercury take on the Chicago Sky on Sunday, May 21.</li>
<li>The Seattle Storm retired Sue Bird’s jersey in an emotional ceremony on Sunday, June 11, with 13,213 fans in attendance for its game against the Washington Mystics, marking the second highest attended game this season.</li>
<li>The first WNBA Canada Game presented by Tangerine, which saw the Chicago Sky defeat the Minnesota Lynx, 82-74, in a preseason game, was played before a sold-out crowd of approximately 20,000 fans at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Saturday, May 13.</li>

<li>RECORD REVENUE: The WNBA has achieved double-digit growth for partnership revenue this year, which is at an all-time 27-year high, season to date.</li>

<li>MERCHANDISE: The league has seen a surge in merchandise sales this season. Overall sales of WNBA merchandise at the NBA Store in New York are up 78 percent versus this season compared to the same time last year. In addition, sales of merchandise at Dick&#8217;s Sporting Goods are up 68 percent compared to the same time last season.</li>

<li>WNBA APP: Since the WNBA launched the digital transformation of its app at the start of the season, WNBA App monthly active users have grown 147 percent over last year.</li>

WNBA Heads Into AT&amp;T WNBA All-Star on Record Pace for Viewership, Attendance, and Digital Consumption

For the first time in franchise history, the Indiana Fever have won the WNBA draft lottery and possess the top overall selection. To say that this pick and the coming season are pivotal for the Fever as an organization would be a drastic undersell. Things have been tough in Indy, to say the least, since WNBA legend Tamika Catchings retired.
It&#8217;s poetic justice that Kelsey Mitchell, a beacon of positivity for the Fever in this recent era, was in ESPN&#8217;s Bristol studios to receive the selection and represent the team.
&#8220;I felt obligated to make sure I take on that responsibility on behalf of my team. For me, it was about a step in the right direction for leadership and to lead the team in the years to come. Getting that number one spot, it&#8217;s a step in the right direction of change&#8230;it adds to our resume to turn things around,&#8221; &#8211; Fever star, Kelsey Mitchell.
While the Fever endured a rough season, there were silver linings in the background.
NaLyssa Smith, the 2nd overall pick in the 2022 Draft, looks the part of a future star and scoring champ. Her blend of size, physicality, fluidity, and scoring touch is rare. Her shooting from outside the arc was further along than expected as the season wore on, finishing the season shooting 38.1% from deep, taking and making more threes in one season as a pro than she did in her entire four year Baylor career, and with greater efficiency.
Emily Engstler, the 4th overall pick in the same draft, showed a budding do everything skillset. Her defense enamors. She has effective and flashy passing in her bag. <a href="https://www.wnba.com/news/queen-egbo-has-made-her-presence-felt/">Queen Egbo</a> was selected later on with the 10th pick and put together impressive stretches of play, flashing improved offense, and potentially dominant rim protection. Destanni Henderson showed real guile and craft as a pick and roll playmaker and dynamic pacing guard off the bench.
The 6th overall pick, Lexie Hull, struggled to find her shot early in the year. Adjusting to WNBA length and athleticism is a different acclimation process for every prospect, something Mitchell relates to.
&#8220;It&#8217;s as simple as going from the college line to the pro line. There&#8217;s so much that the people that judge and criticize don&#8217;t understand, like the lows you have to take in order to get a full understanding at the pro level. A lot gets misconstrued. It&#8217;s not easy, it just takes time.&#8221;
Mitchell feels Engstler and Hull can be real x-factors for the Fever this coming season and in the immediate future with their connective play. She sees the potential for both Smith and Egbo to dominate the paint with interior lay, while also being able to invert the floor and play outside-in with their ability to handle and face-up.
The potential is brimming.
Finding her own potential as a leader and growing into a more veteran role despite barely touching her prime, just turning 27 last week, was a focus this season. A late year foot injury cut her year short, but she was adamant that she wanted to stay around the team and be involved. She signed a multi-year extension prior to the 2021 season and wants to be in Indy. She wants to build with and lead the team to new heights.
The injury robbed her of finishing out a career season, one that was worthy of All-Star consideration. Mitchell improved as a playmaker, continues to slow down the game, and has molded herself into one of the premier pick and roll players and half-court scorers in basketball. But, the injury, the first of her pro career, brought a forced perspective that Mitchell finds beneficial.
<blockquote>&#8220;It was a big deal for me. I think mentally and psychologically, it was a rest button that I needed, a blessing in disguise&#8221; says Mitchell.</blockquote>
No one wants to get hurt of course, but it forced her to take time off and away from the game, something she hadn&#8217;t done since her time at Ohio State. She&#8217;s refreshed and excited to get back on the court with Athletes Unlimited in the late winter/early spring.
Christie Sides was named head coach of the Fever last week, a former assistant during Pokey Chatman&#8217;s tenure on Indiana&#8217;s sideline. Mitchell and Sides overlapped once she was drafted in 2018, and she&#8217;s eager to play for her and take the next step together as a team.
Sides took Mitchell under her wing when she came in as a rookie.
&#8220;She&#8217;s a no-nonsense person,&#8221; says Mitchell.
&#8220;As much fun as she likes to have, she&#8217;s one of those one&#8217;s that&#8217;s going to address the culture early in the game. She&#8217;s gonna make sure everyone is held accountable.&#8221;
As the Fever look to find and craft an identity in the coming season, that accountability and attention to detail will be vital. The Fever are young, but they&#8217;re talented, and they figure to improve even more so in that department with the number one pick. They have a small number of roster spots, but substantial cap space for the ever closer off-season.
As Indiana seeks to take the next step into competitiveness and stamping a firm place in the W, Kelsey Mitchell will undoubtedly be at the forefront of their pivot.

The Brimming Potential of Kelsey Mitchell and the Indiana Fever

Maybe it&#8217;s her natural tendencies toward introversion. Maybe it&#8217;s the busted lip that&#8217;s still healing after taking two impacts to her mouth in the last few days. But Rhyne Howard, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft just a few weeks ago, is letting her game do most of the talking.
On Sunday, she put up 33 points against the Indiana Fever in an 85-74 win, a single-game high for the league in the early days of this WNBA season, in front of a busload of friends, coaches, and former teammates from Kentucky, who made the 185-mile trip from Lexington to root her on. Howard became one of just six players in league history &#8211; including Candace Parker, Yolanda Griffith, Sabrina Ionescu, Danielle Adams, Cappie Pondexter, and Kia Nurse &#8211; who have scored at least 30 points within the first four games of their WNBA careers. And her 17-point first quarter was the most by a rookie in league history.
And now here come the accolades for the 6-foot-2 guard from Cleveland, Tennessee.
On Monday, Howard was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week, the first rookie to win the award in the first week of their WNBA career since Tamika Catchings did it in 2002. And she is the first Atlanta player to win Player of the Week honors.
&#8220;I&#8217;m just super comfortable and my team has confidence in me,&#8221; Howard said following the Indiana win on Sunday. &#8220;The coaches have told me to go play. They drafted me for a reason and I have to come out, make an impact and help the team win.&#8221;
Howard is averaging 20.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in her first four games. She has led the team in scoring in their three wins. Atlanta, which won eight games a season ago, is 3-1 to start this year, the franchise&#8217;s best start since 2017.
&#8220;She is coming in and taking advantage of the things she does well,&#8221; said Dream coach Tanisha Wright. &#8220;She&#8217;s not overdoing it; she&#8217;s not underdoing it. She is playing exactly the same way she&#8217;s always played.&#8221;
It&#8217;s a style of play that translates very well to the professional game. Wright has seen a player who is &#8220;never rushed, or hurried,&#8221; and Howard fits nicely into Atlanta&#8217;s offense and thrives in the right moments.
&#8220;The offense we run opens up the floor a bit for her,&#8221; Wright said. Howard is not surprised that she is settling in so nicely. &#8220;There&#8217;s no reason to be surprised,&#8221; she said.
She feels good about the team chemistry. And her teammates are excited to have her there and play the role of go-to scorer.
&#8220;To know that she&#8217;s here, her purpose, and her role on this team and to know that we can rely on her, it&#8217;s a great feeling,&#8221; said Dream veteran Nia Coffey.
Coffey said that Howard&#8217;s 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter against the Sparks earlier last week, a shot caused Coffey to make eye contact with assistant coach Christie Sides and say, &#8220;Wow.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s a blessing to see her and be on her team to see it,&#8221; Coffey said. &#8220;She&#8217;s special and I&#8217;m so glad she feels comfortable stepping into that and she shows that day after day.&#8221;
Wright said she isn&#8217;t looking for Howard to put up big numbers every day. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t know she had 33 (on Sunday), but she was just doing what I know she is capable of doing,&#8221; Wright said. &#8220;Tonight it&#8217;s 33, but tomorrow it could be 15, as long as she&#8217;s providing what we need to be successful. Whether that&#8217;s a 30-point game or a 15-point game, we will be happy with that.&#8221;
Howard isn&#8217;t feeling like her team is depending too heavily on her. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just &#8216;Rhyne is going to do this,&#8221; Howard said. &#8220;Even in the little amount of time that we&#8217;ve had together, I&#8217;m super proud of how we&#8217;ve been playing.&#8221;
Howard said her basketball dreams have never included the big scoring days. She said she is simplifying &#8220;finding her shot and knocking it down.&#8221; But considering how few WNBA games she has under her belt, her poise and her ability to adjust and excel so quickly are impressive.
Howard&#8217;s big game Sunday came against an Indiana team that is also full of fellow rookies and high draft picks that she knows well and knows how quickly they&#8217;ve all landed in the deep end of the WNBA pool, playing significant roles for their rebuilding teams.
&#8220;It&#8217;s fun going against NaLyssa (Smith), Destanni (Henderson), and Lexie (Hull), but it&#8217;s just another game,&#8221; Howard said. &#8220;There have been adjustments in playing a different way, but I am working on being adaptable and coachable, and to make a statement on the defensive end.
&#8220;It&#8217;s never about scoring first. I&#8217;ve only dreamt about playing in the WNBA, which has come true,&#8221; Howard said.

INDIANAPOLIS – Tamika Catchings announced today she is stepping down from her role as Vice President for Basketball Operations and General Manager of the Indiana Fever. Catchings will continue in her volunteer role as Co-Chair for the 2024 NBA All-Star Board of Directors. Former Fever coach Lin Dunn, who guided the team to the 2012 WNBA title and three total WNBA Finals appearances from 2008-2014, joins the organization as interim General Manager and Senior Advisor for Fever Basketball Operations.

With the 2021 regular season nearly over, most of the playoffs spots secured and <a href="https://www.wnba.com/news/wnba-continues-celebration-of-landmark-25th-season-names-greatest-players-in-league-history-the-w25/">The W25</a> team revealed, the big question of the moment &#8211; which will soon give way to title talk &#8211; is the question of “The GOAT”.
Who is the Greatest of All Time in the WNBA?
It’s a question that begs more questions. What makes a player the GOAT? Is it scoring? Championships? Longevity? All-around play? MVP Awards?
My answer: yes.
The WNBA’s GOAT conversation, in my mind, is one about a body of work. And let’s make no mistake, the players who occupy this short list, have incredible bodies of work. And the margins between them will be slim. And some bodies of work might be left out entirely.
But let’s start this conversation with a list of names, accolades, and the pros and cons arguments.
In alphabetical order:

The Pros: In her 18th season, no one in league history has played at such a high level over a sustained period of time, and having played her entire career with one team &#8211; Seattle &#8211; Bird will go down as the league’s all-time most accomplished and respected floor general with a mix of steadiness and flair that is unmatched. The only player in league history to win a title in three different decades, Bird is a shoo-in Hall of Famer.
The Cons: Bird’s scoring numbers, a career average of 12.0, isn’t eye-popping compared to the other players in the conversation.
Is she the GOAT?: Bird will be known as the greatest point guard in league history and one of its most influential players. It’s hard to imagine a season starting without her. But just short of GOAT status.

The Pros: Catchings is the essence of across-the-board impact, the most well-rounded talent in this bunch when you consider that she ranks among the league’s top 10 in games, minutes, field goals, free throws, rebounds, assists, and points and that the Indiana Fever made the playoffs in each of her last 12 seasons in the league. When she retired, she ranked 1st all-time in career playoff scoring, and 1st all-time in career playoff rebounds. She will go down in history as perhaps the most tenacious defensive player in the game’s history.
The Cons: One championship in a 15-year career is the lowest on this short list even if it doesn’t diminish a Hall of Fame career.
Is she the GOAT? She is the most complete player on this list and her presence in the league is still missed. She has to be considered.

The Pros: Cooper came to the WNBA a bit unknown to the majority of fans and five years later, she left a legend and a champion. She led Houston to four titles as their thrilling heart-and-soul player, she put together a 92-game double-figure scoring streak from 1997 to 2000 and when she retired in 2000, Cooper became the first player in WNBA history to score 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 2,500 career points.
The Cons: She came into the league at 34 years old and used her five years incredibly well to make her mark on WNBA history, but her shortened career limited her impact over a longer stretch. Additionally, Coop was never known as a lockdown defender. She was a scorer.
Is she the GOAT? Cooper was literally and figuratively a Comet in the WNBA. Longevity is the deciding factor here.

She was the league’s first dominant post player, and widely regarded as the best player in the world because of her versatility and toughness. Leslie was a nightmare of a matchup for players at both ends of the floor because of her length and athleticism. She ended her 12-year career as the league’s leading scorer and rebounder.

The Cons: Moore’s decision to halt her career &#8211; albeit for noble, world-changing reasons &#8211; leaves a lot of ‘what-if’ wonderings about how much more she could have added to her basketball resume.
Is she the GOAT? She might have been. Without a return to the court to add to her legacy, Moore leaves us all wanting more.

Swoopes twice won the league’s scoring title, averaging 15.0 points a game over her career, and was the first player to post a triple-double in both the regular season and the playoffs. Her multi-dimensional game &#8211; as both an offensive and defensive standout &#8211; elevates her GOAT candidacy.
The Cons: Swoopes played nine WNBA seasons and didn’t win another title after Cooper was out of the league.

She leads the league in playoff scoring (in 61 postseason games), 3-point field goals, and is the only player in league history ​​with at least 8,000 career points, 1,500 rebounds, 1,500 assists, 1,000 3-pointers, and 300 blocks. And beyond all of Taurasi’s accolades, she brings a heavy load of intangibles, the toughness, the swagger, the innate ability to meet a big moment.
The Cons: It seems nearly impossible to process that Taurasi has only won the WNBA MVP once, and while her offensive accolades are never in question, she’s never been considered a standout defensive player. Her five Olympic gold medals and her international success make her a definitive front-runner for the sport’s greatest player ever, but does she have the best WNBA body of work?
Is she the GOAT? It’s pretty hard to argue that she’s not.

As the end of 2020 draws near, WNBA.com is wrapping up this historic season by reviewing each team’s season. Take a look back at notable contributors and season highlights with the 2020 Season In Review. Next up is the Dallas Wings.
Overview:
Leading up to the 2020 season, the Dallas Wings revamped their roster by acquiring second-year guards Marina Mabrey (traded from Los Angeles Sparks) and Katie Lou Samuelson (traded from Chicago Sky). The team also added Astou Ndor (traded from Chicago Sky) to the lineup in 2020. The Wings topped off their squad with three rookies, including Satou Sabally. Unlike other teams in the W, Dallas was not equipped with one true veteran to produce on the floor.  Second-year player Arike Ogunbowale traditionally carried most of the workload. Consequently, the Wings finished 2020 with an 8-14 record, marking another losing season. After missing the playoffs, Dallas and former head coach <a href="https://www.wnba.com/news/dallas-wings-and-head-coach-brian-agler-mutually-agree-to-part-ways/">Brian Agler agreed to mutually part ways</a>. Although the young squad experienced some growing pains, there were positives the Wings can take away from this season.
Players such as Marina Mabrey saw a significant jump in playing time. The WNBA leading scorer, Arike Ogunbowale, (averaged 22.8 PPG) proved that she can take over a game, especially in the clutch, and newcomer Satou Sabally played a huge role on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

Arike Ogunbowale
In Year 2, the Notre Dame product revealed that her rookie campaign was not a fluke. The WNBA leading scorer set the bar high, averaging 22.8 PPG on 41.2% shooting. In an overtime victory against the Washington Mystics, Ogunbowale scored a career-high 39 points by shooting an electrifying 50% from the field and going 4-6 from downtown. On September 11, Ogunbowale came one point shy of tying her career-high. After scoring in double figures in all 22 games this season, the second-year pro was the only sophomore to grace the All-WNBA First Team.

Satou Sabally
Satou Sabally was picked No. 2 overall by Dallas in the 2020 WNBA Draft, and her dominant play for the Wings illustrated why. Throughout the season, Sabally battled with a number of injuries, causing her to see action in a total of 16 games. Nevertheless, when the rook was available she averaged 13.9 PPG while corralling in a team-best 7.8 RPG. The 6-4 forward joined Tamika Catchings, Candace Parker and Breanna Stewart as the only rookies in WNBA history to average at least 13.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

Marina Mabrey
After occasionally seeing the floor with the vet-heavy Los Angeles Sparks roster a season ago, Mabrey came to Dallas and fit right in. Her role as a playmaking guard was elevated, and of course, she was reunited with her former college backcourt mate Ogunbowale. The 5-11 guard shot an impressive 41.8% from long range this season. As a sophomore, Mabrey started in 12 games and averaged a career-high 10.6 PPG while playing 22.4 MPG. In the Wings final contest of the season, the sharp shooter eclipsed a career-high in both three-pointers made (6-11 3FGM) and total points (finished with 24 points). 
Season Highlights:
Ogunbowale Earns WNBA Peak Performer Award
At the end of the regular season, Arike Ogunbowale led the league in scoring at 22.8 PPG. This accomplishment earned the prolific scorer the 2020 WNBA Peak Performer Award. In honor of Ogunbowale’s achievement, the second-year pro was crafted a trophy by Tiffany &amp; Co.
Sabally Named To All-Rookie Team
Satou Sabally received the maximum amount of votes (11) from a panel of the WNBA&#8217;s 12 coaches, and rightfully so. The first-year pro posted a total of 5 double-doubles, and at 13.9 PPG, the rook ranked third in scoring for her class and first in rebounding.

Dallas Wings, Brian Agler Mutually Agree To Part Ways
It is still up in the air as to who will be the next head coach for the Dallas Wings. In a press release, Wings CEO Greg Bibb stated, “As we look to the future, we believe our team is talented and well-positioned for success.&#8221; Whoever gets appointed to lead this team next will take on the role of continuing to acquire the right pieces to help build around Arike Ogunbowale and vie for a championship.

ESPN, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) today announced that 10-time NBA All-Star Chris Paul of the Oklahoma City Thunder, 2020 NBA All-Star Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks and newly elected Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings headline the list of eight NBA and WNBA players and legends who will participate in the new NBA HORSE Challenge Presented by State Farm, exclusively on ESPN and streamed via the ESPN App.
Beginning Sunday, April 12 at 7 p.m. ET, Paul, Young, Catchings, Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine, three-time WNBA All-Star Allie Quigley of the Chicago Sky, Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley Jr. and NBA Finals MVPs Chauncey Billups and Paul Pierce will match shots against one another in a single-elimination HORSE competition from their respective, isolated home courts. ESPN NBA commentator Mark Jones will serve as the official host.
State Farm will donate more than $200,000 on behalf of the participants to charities focused on coronavirus response efforts. This donation builds on the more than $74 million that has been contributed by the NBA Family to date to support coronavirus relief efforts through its <a href="https://cares.nba.com/nbatogether/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NBA Together campaign</a>.
NBA HORSE Challenge Presented by State Farm participants will be divided into two groups of four, with the winners of the first two games in each group meeting in the semifinals.  The winner from each group will move on to the championship round.  ESPN will present the four quarterfinal games on Sunday. The semifinals and the championship game will air on Thursday, April 16, beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
A coin toss at the start of each game will determine who shoots first, with the more senior player calling heads or tails.  Players must describe each shot attempt, specifying the type of score they intend to make before taking a shot, such as a bank shot or swish. Dunking is prohibited. The first player in each game to accumulate the letters “H-O-R-S-E” after failing to match five shots is eliminated.
