Head Coach Fred Williams
(On tonight’s game) “I thought Seattle played hard. They passed the ball. They average 27 assists per game and I let the team know that before the game. It was our transition defense tonight, we just didn’t get back fast enough. Our bigs and our guards didn’t protect back. I thought we left our minds a bit from the LA game and didn’t really show up. It was a lesson learned and we have to get ready to play on the road in a back-to back situation to get ourselves going again.”
(On tonight’s fourth quarter) “We came out empty on a lot of shots and Seattle is a good transition team to get the ball off and the rim and push it on you, especially Sue Bird. She is best in the business in picking you apart. With her and Jordin Canada now, they can get to the rim and cause a lot of trouble. That’s what happened when we tied the score and came up close. We came out empty on a few shots. They came up with some good plays. Stewart opened it up with some threes in the fourth quarter. We’ve just got to play harder.
“I’ll say it again, like Charles Barkley said, it’s either a good shot or it’s not. We’ve got to put the ball in the basket. They put the ball in the basket tonight. I thought Seattle had players come off the bench and put it up. For us, we just didn’t put it in. If you miss, they will run out on you.”
Wings Center Liz Cambage
(On tonight’s fourth quarter) “We just weren’t hungry enough to win the game.”
(On what to fix) “We need to come ready to play, we need to bring energy, and we need to be better.”
Wings forward Kayla Thornton
(On playing consistent) “I think we just have to come up more focused as a unit…we have to bring the same energy and the same intensity, and the same effort as if we won, or whatever it is.”
(On tonight’s fourth quarter) “We didn’t give the effort.”
Head Coach Dan Hughes
Thoughts on the game
“Well, it came down to about the last nine minutes, we were sitting there at 68-68, we had had runs, they
had had runs. I thought we just did a good job of being able to get some stops, and we scored really well.
(Sue) Bird did a great job of finding people, (Breanna) Stewart was excellent just in finishing in that stretch. It was just that combination to help us be able to separate down the stretch.”
On creating separation in the fourth quarter
“I think we were able to defend, rebound, and then play back at them. And that was a hard thing to do – (Liz) Cambage had periods where they do it, they attacked us, we played back and forth and back and forth. But we got a little foothold defensively late, and I thought that was the difference.”
On defensive approach
“Well, we had various things that we were trying to do, especially when you’re starting with Cambage and Skylar (Diggins-Smith). Like any situation, they’re not going to work the whole game. Lucky for us, it worked in the second half, and they worked late. It’s not like we did anything really different than we did in the first half, but sometimes you gain momentum when things aren’t going in the basket. I thought we gained a littlemomentum.”
On winning the transition game
“We shot it good. It’s one of those days where you’re making shots, so they’re having a hard time getting
that transition phase going because we’re scoring pretty regular.”
Forward, Breanna Stewart
On the game
“We knew it was going to be a battle. Last time we came here, we didn’t have (Crystal Langhorne) or Sue
(Bird), so to have them back was great. AC (Alysha Clarke) is out right now, and I think, down the stretch we just made more plays than them.”
On Second chance points
“Really, just crashing as much as possible. Natasha (Howard) does a great job getting in there, and getting her hands on balls, getting us a second opportunity to score. I think the last game, they out-rebounded us by a pretty big margin, and we want to be aggressive and kind of make them have to worry about us instead of us worrying about them crashing.”
On personal performance
“I mean, just doing what I do best. You know, trying to be the best, and obviously, I want to win. I’m here, I’m playing because I want to win this game, I’m just a competitive player. You know, there comes a time when you don’t worry about being tired – everybody’s tired. And you just do things to make better plays.”
