Notes and Quotes: Dallas Beats Chicago, 108-85

Dallas Wings Quotes:
Head Coach Fred Williams (On tonight’s game) “I thought the first half that we didn’t really show up like we should. I thought Chicago has some fine shooters. They can shoot the basketball and get it in. Our thing is to just get the ball off the rim and get us some fastbreak points. We wanted to change that in halftime and change that so we could start getting some runs.”
(On the third quarter) “I just thought (Skylar Diggins-Smith) was having a feel for the game in the first half. Feeding her teammates, trying to get a lot of them involved. In the second half she was able to run some patterns that we had set, and she was able to get to the rim and attack. She got a couple of and-one plays.”
(On Diggins-Smith) “I’ve wanted to really get her out in the second half, but we had that group that was scoring in the second half and she was part of it. I called a couple of timeouts to get her some rest. In the first half, for sure, we got her some minutes in the first half, about 4-5 minutes of rest and we’ll probably do that the rest of the season.”
Wings center Liz Cambage (On tonight’s game) “I was just happy to get the win. We were hungry for a win. That’s how we play. We were a bit slow defensively, then we stepped it up in the second half.”
(On her performance) “I’m a post player but with everything, I try to have an outside game, work on my bounces and just try to do what I can to get better every day. Right now, I’m just trying to work on finishing my and-ones and my defense. Putting in a little bit extra work on the three-point line.”
Wings guard Skylar Diggins-Smith (On tonight’s game) “When Liz got it going like that, she’s got it going. We got contributions from the bench and the ball movement, with me penetrating. We knew from the scouting report that they were going to collapse so sometimes it was a kick…I thought it opened for us. I always talk about how I love getting in transition. I thought (Cayla) George came in and set some great screens for me, Liz set some great screens…I didn’t even shoot the ball in the first half. It opened up a bit for me with Liz being so aggressive. That opens it up for a lot of us.”
(On Liz Cambage) “I told you we’ve been doing those weird first half-second half games, but she played the whole 40 minutes tonight. When she is playing like that, she is the best player in the league. I’m grateful to play with someone like that. When you also have someone like Kayla Thornton who doesn’t take a play off, Gray started knocking them down. It opens up for a lot of us. It really builds our confidence to go those stops.”
Chicago Sky Quotes:
HEAD COACH AMBER STOCKS (On the team’s performance tonight) “Our team has great togetherness and when there was a breakdown on one aspect of the game we were able to pick each other up, we were able to rotate and have each other’s back. I think they covered each other’s blind spots. Unfortunately, this one got away from us.”
(On the takeaways from tonight’s game) “Our young players played well. Alania Coates did a great job of coming in and playing to her strengths. Our offense was solid, we’re continuing to score the ball fairly well. There are some defensive adjustments that we’ll continue to grow on.”
GUARD ALLIE QUIGLEY (On tonight’s performance) “I think it was just a defensive thing for us tonight. We could not find a way to make Cambage uncomfortable.” (On what to work on moving forward) “I think we just have to watch the film and be a better defensive team. Our offense isn’t the problem, it is the defense. We have to learn from this, but we have another game coming up. A loss by 30 or a loss by one, a loss is a loss.”
