Las Vegas Signs Dearica Hamby To Contract Extension

Official Release From Las Vegas Aces

Las Vegas (February 1, 2021)—Las Vegas Aces President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Bill Laimbeer announced today that the team has signed two-time, WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year award winner Dearica Hamby to a contract extension through the 2022 season.

“Dearica has been a huge part of the Aces rise to championship contender since the team moved to Las Vegas, particularly over the past two years, and last season’s run to the WNBA Finals,” said Laimbeer. “She brings an energy to the court that is infectious not only to her teammates but also to our fans, and we are excited to be able to extend her contract through the 2022 season.”

Since making the move to the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World three seasons ago, Hamby is averaging 10.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while connecting on 51.3 percent of her field goal attempts, and 35.3 percent of her shots from long distance

The Wake Forest graduate has been even better over her last two seasons, averaging 11.8 points and 7.4 rebounds. Hamby took home WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year honors in each of the last two years.

“It’s exciting to know that I will be in Las Vegas for the next two years,” added Hamby, “and I’m looking forward to continuing our journey to bring a WNBA Championship to a city and fanbase that has done so much to embrace us.”

The six-year WNBA veteran etched her name into Las Vegas sports history during the Aces Second Round Playoff win over Chicago on September 15, 2019.

The Sky inbounded the ball with 13 seconds remaining, clinging to a 92-90 lead in the teams’ winner-take-all game. Hamby stepped in front of a Courtney Vandersloot pass at midcourt, tiptoed the sideline, and launched a 35-foot prayer with 7.5 seconds to go that swished through the hoop to send the Aces to the Conference Finals.

And thus, the “Hamby Heave” was born.
