Overview

Two years removed from finishing atop the Eastern Conference standings, the Connecticut Sun enter 2015 still looking to establish their identity.

After finishing last in the Eastern Conference in 2013 and 2014, the Sun finds themselves in the same position many young teams around the league have been in at one point or another. Perhaps a few years away from contending, the team has enough building blocks to inspire optimism.

Unfortunately for Connecticut, a knee injury that required surgery for forward Chiney Ogwukime will likely put her out for a good portion of the WNBA season, which leaves an uncertain post rotation for head coach Anne Donovan. The trade for veteran forward Camille Little (and guard Shekinna Stricklen) should provide some insurance as the team awaits Ogwumike’s return.

The Sun once owned the No. 3 and No. 4 picks in the upcoming draft, but traded the third pick and Renee Montgomery to Seattle for Little and Stricklen. Both players will have an opportunity to play a major role this season, but it’s what the Sun could add with the fourth pick that could indicate where the franchise sees its rebuilding plans.

“We could go either way. We have a need for a strong guard or a strong post,” said Donavan. “So we’re thankful with the two additions, because that drops players down that we really didn’t think were in our consideration before.”

Duke’s Elizabeth Williams could be an option with for the Sun with the No. 4 pick. Williams, a four-time Associated Press All-American, established herself as a dominant post player throughout her college career and could be a natural fit.

In addition to Williams, there will likely be plenty of strong guard prospects remaining on the board when the Sun is on the clock. California’s Brittany Boyd may be available at No. 4 and would be a nice addition to an already talented backcourt.
