The W in Designer: Three Style Trends at the 2025 Draft

NEW YORK (AP) — The <a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://apnews.com/article/wnba-2025-draft-paige-bueckers-a28fac1f8159d889ce385339717ab987" data-gtm-enhancement-style="LinkEnhancementA">WNBA draft</a> has increasingly become a platform for more than just athleticism — it is a celebration of identity, heritage, culture, and self-expression.
<a class="Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement" href="https://apnews.com/article/wnba-draft-paige-bueckers-geno-0fbfad69c93f09d6cb6e222928372cfc" data-gtm-enhancement-style="LinkEnhancementA">Paige Bueckers</a> may have been the No. 1 pick, but it was Kiki Iriafen who arguably stole the show when it came to fashion. Even Bueckers herself said Iriafen had the best look of the night.
Iriafen, drafted fourth overall by the Washington Mystics, is a forward who just wrapped up her senior season at USC, where she averaged 18 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. On the orange carpet, she made a statement — one rooted deeply in her Nigerian heritage.
“I’m Nigerian so I wanted to work with a Nigerian designer,” she said. “I was really adamant. I want a slip. I want the waist snapped. I can’t really breathe. I wanted to feel good, I wanted to look good.”
Future stars are using draft night as more than an opportunity to step into the spotlight for their talent on the court, but to use the moment to honor where they come from, showcase who they are beyond the jersey, and make powerful statements through fashion, family, and tradition.
Iriafen wore a custom, shimmering gold dress embellished with intricate detailing, designed by Nigerian designer Nneka Alexander — who also created Chiney Ogwumike’s wedding gown. To complete the look, Iriafen wore a traditional orange-beaded Nigerian bracelet, seamlessly blending modern glam with cultural pride.
The 6-foot-3 Iriafen was not alone.
Dominique Malonga, the gifted 6-6 forward from France and the second overall pick by the Seattle Storm, brought a piece of home with her. She stepped out in a sleek suit designed by none other than Louis Vuitton — one of France’s, and the world’s, most iconic fashion houses.
“A huge collaboration between them,” Malonga said. “I’m like a simple, classic person.”
Still, she made it clear that while her style might be understated, her game is anything but. As a forward, she knows she can do it all. At just 19, she’s already been playing high-level basketball overseas for four years.
Malonga wasn’t the only Storm player showcasing her roots on the orange carpet. Seattle Storm point guard and former UConn Husky Nika Muhl also proudly embraced her Croatian heritage
“I came all the way from Croatia to be here,” Muhl said. “I had to bring Croatia with me.”
Muhl was wearing a black pantsuit with a black crop top underneath, complemented by a chain of keys draped across her body. The entire look was designed by Croatian brand Y/GIA and styled by a Croatian stylist.
Even the players who couldn’t attend the draft found ways to let their identities shine.
Te-Hina Paopao, the sharp-shooting South Carolina guard, was selected 18th overall by the Atlanta Dream. Appearing on TV from her draft party, she wore a traditional Samoan dress, along with several flower lei around her neck—symbolic necklaces in Samoan culture that honor and celebrate.
“I am so blessed to be Samoan,” said Paopao. “When you think of Samoan culture you think of family and I am so ready to bring that culture to Atlanta.”
And family was definitely present — about 300 people gathered behind her at her draft party in California, a powerful visual of support and pride.
As they step into the professional spotlight, they carry with them not just their skills, but the pride of their families, their communities, and their cultures. The future of the WNBA isn’t just about basketball; it’s about creating a space where every player can be their true, authentic self—on the court and beyond.

Finishing her season of sneaker debuts, Sabrina Ionescu wears a new pair of Nike sneakers called the Sabrina 2 in a "Lily" colorway. Although these sneakers won't be released until summer of 2025, its strategic debut allows these sneakers to go down in history as her Championship-winning model. The color is inspired by Ionescu's mother, Liliana. Nyara Sabally also wears a model from Ionescu's collaboration with Nike, the Sabrina 2's in the "Conductor" colorway.

Multiple players across both teams enhanced their on-court powers by wearing pink on their sneakers. On the Liberty, Kayla Thornton wears a pair of New Balance Two WXY V5 Basketball Shoes in an electrifying pink and purple colorway. Betnijah Laney wears a pair of adidas Harden Volume 8 Shoes in a 'Miami Nights' colorway, with pink and touches of neon blue. 

On the Minnesota Lynx, Alanna Smith wears a Nike LeBron XXI sneaker in pink with metallic details. Courtney Williams wears the Triple Double in "Pink GRL" by Moolah Kicks, with a subtle Y2K-inspired leopard print pattern.

The recent games in the Semi-Finals of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs presented by Google have brought unexpected looks from the top players. Instead of sticking to their signature styles and pieces, multiple players have teamed up with their stylists to surprise fans with new aesthetics and moods. 

The intensity of recent games is reflected in more energetic styling, but these outfits aren't necessarily more 'business formal' or 'streetwear casual.' Queen Egbo teams up with stylist Tosha Hartzog to create this 'edgy baddie' in the Aces' team colors of red and black. Bringing in elements of fun with her artistic 'Fake Birkin' bag by Saturday House, a Black-owned brand, Egbo also wears a matching red jacket. Wearing a pair of chunky, black leather boots, the overall look reads more fierce than some of Egbo's past laidback, streetwear style.

She loves plays on words and we felt like it became 'camp.'

Preparing for the upcoming pregame outfits, discover key style differences between the two teams.

Minnesota Lynx players wear blinged-out jewelry, but their choices tend to be smaller. From Diamond Miller's intricate personalized pendant to Kayla McBride's staple diamond or gold link chains, these subtle jewelry pieces offer another way for these players to flex. As we reflect on the First Round of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs presented by Google, “The W in Designer” breaks down three key style differentiators between the New York Liberty and the Atlanta Dream. The overall reputation of both teams goes beyond comparing their players’ outfits, as both teams have recently enhanced their style through cool co-signs across high fashion and music.&nbsp;

Check out the contrasts fans can see from both team’s holistic styles. 

Expanding the Liberty's ultra-cool status, the team unveiled a multi-year partnership with Off-White™ as its first Official Style and Culture Curator. Style-wise, this historic announcement gives the Liberty players an advantage in their tunnel looks for the playoffs-- players are united in an exclusive Seafoam green varsity jacket. This announcement is bigger than the realm of sports, as it offers a seamless introduction to the Liberty for fashion-obsessed communities. 

While other teams have seen celebrities seated courtside at their games, the Atlanta Dream hosted Latto and Mariah the Scientist in all-white, designer outfits. Spotting these top female musicians amplifies the team to their respective fan bases, and both talents truly dressed on theme for their appearances. Aligning with the city's legacy in the rap scene, Mariah the Scientist took things to the next level by participating in the game's t-shirt toss.

The Liberty players are naturally drawn to the city's typical style of dressing: wearing lots of black; sharp, strong outfits; and integrating their favorite designer pieces. The team's Seafoam green clashes against this style, making it tricky for players to wear the color. Other players are catching the last moments to wear trending summer styles, bringing oversized tops and the Beyoncé-inspired cowboy look into the tunnel. Players have been expressing the idea of girlhood through their baby tees, like Kamilla Cardoso's 'I'm Literally Just a Girl' top. BH: Going into her rookie year, her signature elements are bold, dynamic, confident, and, most importantly, fearless.

KC: Tell me about the vision for Nika’s style this season. Any inspirations, aesthetics, etc.?

BH: Yes! Nika came to me with a clear vision of what she wanted. She’s one of my most studious clients! She brought ideations, mood boards, color palettes, and even fully executed trend reports. I promised to bring that vision to life.

KC: What is Nika’s go-to style for a lazy, away game?&nbsp;

BH: ‘Lazy’ isn’t in Nika’s vocabulary. I tried to get her to wear a sweatsuit look, and she declined!

KC: What’s your favorite thing about working with women’s basketball players?

BH: They embody dedication, hard work, and perseverance. Their stories and the paths they are paving for future generations of young women are why I choose to stand beside them.
