WNBA Playoff Race to Watch: Lynx, Sparks Vying for No. 1 Seed

Entering the final weekend of the 2017 WNBA regular season, it’s no surprise which two teams are at the top of the standings: the Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks, who met in the WNBA Finals last October.
What is surprising is how L.A. has narrowed the gap on Minnesota, which held a comfortable lead just a month ago at 20-2. The defending champion Sparks now trail the Lynx by a single game with two contests remaining for both teams.

What’s At Stake
Under the new playoff format introduced last season, the top two seeds earn double-byes to the semifinals, while Nos. 3 and 4 earn single byes to the single-elimination second round. Minnesota and L.A. already have those double-byes locked up, but this final weekend will be a battle for home-court advantage throughout the WNBA Playoffs.
Both the Lynx and Sparks are particularly dominant at home, with a 13-2 and 14-1 home record, respectively. But while home court is certainly an advantage, don’t forget: The home team was 2-3 in the teams’ epic Finals series, including the Sparks’ winner-take-all road win in Game 5.
