What is the Commissioner’s Cup?
As part of the WNBA’s 25th season celebrations, the WNBA is launching the inaugural Commissioner’s Cup Championship, an innovative in-season “competition within a competition,” through which teams will set their sights set on a $500,000 prize pool and the title of Commissioner’s Cup Champion.
Does the Commissioner’s Cup Championship replace the traditional WNBA Finals?
No. The Commissioner’s Cup Championship is a separate element. The 2021 WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV will continue to be a best-of-five series featuring the two teams that advance through the 2021 WNBA Playoffs presented by Google.
Who is eligible for the Commissioner’s Cup?
All 12 teams – the six in the Eastern Conference and the six in the Western Conference – will compete in Commissioner’s Cup play. The team from each conference with the highest winning percentage in “Cup games” will earn a berth to the Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game on Aug. 12 in Phoenix, Arizona.
How many Commissioner’s Cup games are there?
There are 60 regular-season games – 10 per team – that have been designated as “Cup games”. Specifically, “Cup games” will be the first home game and first road game each team plays against its five intra-conference rivals, all set to take place in the first half of the season.
When does the Commissioner’s Cup start and end?
Cup games will be played between May 14 – July 11, prior to the in-season break. The Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game will be played on Aug. 12 – after the conclusion of the Olympics and prior to the resumption of the WNBA’s regular season schedule on August 15.
