Game 3s on ESPN 2: What to Watch for in Tuesday’s Winner-Take-All Matchups

A pair of Conference Finals berths are on the line on Tuesday night when the first round of the WNBA Playoffs 2015 presented by Boost Mobile concludes on ESPN 2.
In Game 3 of their best-of-three series, the New York Liberty and Washington Mystics tip off the action at 7 PM ET, followed by the Minnesota Lynx hosting the Los Angeles Sparks at 9 PM ET.
Both No. 4 seeds are on the brink of upsetting the top seed in their respective conference. Will they pull it off?
Get set for each matchup:
New York Liberty vs. Washington Mystics
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York City
When: 7 PM ET, NBA TV
Three Things to Watch:
1. Tina Charles. The All-Star forward willed the Liberty to a Game 2 victory and did so in dominant fashion. Charles scored 17 points in the third quarter – including a stepback three-pointer – and gave the Liberty an advantage they would not relinquish. The top-seeded Liberty will need more dominance from Charles in Game 3. She told ESPN’s LaChina Robinson that she’s approaching every game in the playoffs like it’s her last.
2. Second Chance In MSG. The Liberty have brought playoff basketball back to Madison Square Garden, but they fell short in the first game of the series, despite a tremendous playoff environment. The crowd was amped for the entire game and erupted numerous times in the game’s waning moments of regulation and overtime. In the end, Ivory Latta and the Mystics silenced the Liberty faithful as the series moved to Washington. But now the Liberty get an opportunity to close out the opening round on their home floor. They’ll get a second chance to get a playoff win in Madison Square Garden.
3. Upset opportunity. The story told prior to the postseason made it very clear that the playoffs were wide open in each conference – especially in the East. After all, Washington had New York’s number during the regular season, beating them three of the four times they clashed on the hardwood. And they helped their chances of toppling the No. 1 seed in double overtime to open the series. Now, they have a chance to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals and win their first playoff series since 2002. But they’ll have to do it on the road in an elimination game in Madison Square Garden. The first win was tough. Expect this one to be even tougher.

Minnesota Lynx vs. Los Angeles Sparks
Where: Target Center, Minneapolis
When: 9 PM ET, NBA TV
Three Things to Watch:
1. Maya vs. Candace. Do-or-die games are about the stars, and this do-or-die game will feature two of the league’s brightest at the top of their games. Maya Moore has erupted for 33 and 27 points in the first two games. Candace Parker missed the potential game-tying shot at the buzzer in Game 1 and responded with a monster Game 2 (25 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists). Which former MVP will step up?
2. Homecourt Advantage. The Lynx are 89-13 at home since drafting Maya Moore in 2011, including 16-1 in the postseason. Needless to say, the Target Center is one of the league’s most difficult places to play for opposing teams, and the Lynx crowd will surely be a factor. How much of a factor remains to be seen — the Sparks would be well suited to jump ahead early to settle the game down.
3. The Turnover Battle. With both teams rolling out starting lineups of five All-Stars, this game may come down to who finds an offensive rhythm in the pressure-packed environment. The Sparks and Lynx ranked No. 1 and 2 in assists this season, respectively, yet L.A.’s 14 Game 1 turnovers and Minnesota’s 16 Game 2 turnovers cost them in losses.
What They’re Saying:
#LosLynx. Game 3. Tomorrow.
Be there! You never know who else you might see…
