WNBA Draft 2016 Countdown (3 Days): Chiney Ogwumike, No. 1 Pick, 2014

In the 20 days leading up to the 20th annual WNBA Draft, WNBA.com and @WNBA are highlighting the first 19 No. 1 overall picks and their place in league history. Our 20-day countdown continues with Chiney Ogwumike, the first selection in the 2014 WNBA Draft.
With the first pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, the Connecticut Sun selected forward Chiney Ogwumike out of Stanford. Two years after watching her sister Nneka drafted first overall by the L.A. Sparks, Chiney matched her sister’s accomplishment and put their family in elite company. Chiney and Nneka are just the second siblings to be drafted No. 1 overall in American professional sports, joining Peyton and Eli Manning.
Chiney joined the Sun after a stellar collegiate career at Stanford, where she was a two-time AP All-American, two-time Pac-12 Player of the Year and finished her career as the conference’s all-time leader in both points and rebounds.

An athletic post player and tenacious rebounder, Ogwumike made an immediate impact with the Sun, leading the team in scoring (15.5 ppg), rebounding (8.5), blocks (1.2) and field goal percentage (53.7%) her rookie season on her way to being named WNBA Rookie of the Year.
Unfortunately, Ogwumike was unable to follow up her rookie campaign in 2015, as she had microfracture surgery on her right knee in January of 2015 that kept her out for the entire WNBA season. Needless to say the 2014 All-Star is eager for the 2016 season to tip off so she can get back on the court for the Sun.
