WNBA Draft 2016 Countdown (20 Days): Tina Thompson, No. 1 Pick, 1997

In the 20 days leading up to the 20th annual WNBA Draft, WNBA.com and @WNBA are highlighting the first 19 No. 1 overall picks and their place in league history. Our 20-day countdown begins with Tina Thompson, the first selection in the inaugural WNBA Draft.
With the first overall pick in the first ever WNBA Draft, the Houston Comets selected Tina Thompson out of USC.
Combined with the acquisitions of Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes, the selection would shape the early history of the league, as that Big 3 would bring home the first four championships.
Thompson would go on to compile one of the great resumes in women’s basketball history: two Olympic gold medals, nine WNBA All-Star appearances, the No. 1 spot on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list (7,488 career points) and the No. 3 spot on the career rebounds list (3,070).
