— The WNBA’s all-time leading scorer joins the college ranks two years after retiring —

A WNBA legend is about to tip off a new career in basketball.

Tina Thompson, the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer, has been hired by the University of Texas as an assistant women’s basketball coach, the school announced on Monday.

The 40-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the Longhorns. Thompson played 17 WNBA seasons after being selected out of USC as the No. 1 pick in the league’s inaugural Draft — the first 12 of them with the Houston Comets, with whom she captured the first four championships in league history.

Her resume also includes nine WNBA All-Star selections and two Olympic gold medals.

“It feels great to be a Longhorn,” Thompson said in the school’s official release. “The tradition of pursing excellence at UT is very much how I live my life.”
