Thoughts From Shootaround Ahead Of Winner-Take-All Game 5

MINNEAPOLIS — As far as shootarounds go, the vibe coming from both the Minnesota Lynx and the Indiana Fever was similar to what it’s felt like throughout the series — anxious anticipation. Both teams have made all the adjustments they’re going to make. Now it’s a matter of executing on the court when Game 5 tips tonight at 8 p.m. on ESPN 2.

The Indiana Fever won a pivotal Game 4 to force this moment, and ahead of tonight’s winner-take-all game, head coach Stephanie White’s squad was relaxed and loose.

“We’re excited,” said Fever guard Shavonte Zellous. “We’re focused. I think for the most part we’re all just ready to play. Game 5. Last game of the season, and everybody is just anxious to get on the court.”

The Fever have approached most games in this series with that same focused-yet-loose mentality. They’re consistently loose and relaxed prior to the biggest games.

“We’re always relaxed,” Zellous said. “No need to be uptight. For what? It’s just another game. Yes, it’s our last game, but you can’t go into the game being uptight and stressing ourselves out. That’s why we’re a good group. Everybody’s relaxed and everybody enjoys having fun and we’re just preparing for tonight. I think everybody is just extremely excited to be a part of this, and we’re ready to play.”

Lynx center Sylvia Fowles has never been a part of a Game 5 before. In fact, the magnitude of tonight’s game could be one of the largest of her career. So, it’d be perfectly understandable if she was nervous ahead of the big game.

But Big Syl says, surprisingly, that wasn’t the case when she woke up Wednesday morning.

“No, actually I got some good sleep last night!” exclaimed Fowles. “Which was surprising, because normally I’ve been nervous throughout this whole series, but last night I actually got sleep. I got in bed at like 10 p.m., I clocked out around 10:28 p.m. That’s the last time that I saw the clock. And I woke up at 7 because of the train. It was honking so loud and it woke me up. But I actually slept through the night, so maybe that’s a good thing.”
