Day two of training camp practice has come to a close and today we saw Sue Bird and Lindsay Whalen continue to show great chemistry on the floor together and the Ogwumike sisters bring a strong toughness to the hardwood. Here are more notes from today's practice:
All About Defense:
+ Head Coach Geno Auriemma let the players know that if they want to impress the coaching staff it will start on the defensive side of the ball.
+ Today the team practiced how they will guard pick and rolls, shut down perimeter passing and trap in certain situations.
+ During the drills this morning, Hall of Famer Dawn Staley said she was impressed about how well the team worked as a complete unit.
+ On a day where the focal point was defense, three players showed that they can still make some of the best defenders in the world look bad: Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus and Angel McCoughtry.
- On three consecutive plays during team drills, Moore tore apart the opposing defense. She started her barrage with back-to-back threes, which forced Auriemma to stop the drill momentarily for a teaching moment. But that didnt stop Moore who used a nifty fake to cut to the base line and hit an almost impossible runner behind the backboard.
- Along with the reigning WNBA MVP, Augustus and McCoughtry also showed off their high basketball IQs and strong dribble penetration throughout the day.
Moment of the Day:
+ After practice, the USA Womens National Team ate lunch in the Naval Academy mess hall where they received a standing ovation from over 20,000 midshipmen.
+ During the meal, a few freshmen midshipmen asked some of the players to join them for lunch dates at separate tables. Odyssey Sims, Stefanie Dolson and Maya Moore all happily accepted these invitations.
Quote of the Day:
+ When a player fouls someone, its because they are not good enough or they are not smart enough. Auriemma pushing on the importance of playing smart defense.
