Day one of training camp at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md was spent installing quick offensive sets as Head Coach Geno Auriemma pushed his players to get creative and use their own basketball IQs to expand on each possession. Here's a rundown on today's practice:
House of Guards:
Auriemma is going to have his hands full when it comes to selecting back court players for the upcoming FIBA World Championship:
+ Briann Januarys tenacity on the defensive side of the ball stood out today. Not only was she a pest on the defensive end, but she also ran the offense with precision.
+ Odyssey Sims can score. The Tulsa Shock guard knocked down shots from all over the floor.
+ Lindsay Whalen and Sue Bird have a nice chemistry on the floor together. Both veterans know the offense and played off of one another well.
+ The message was clear from the start--Team USA will play at a high pace in this tournament. Throughout drills the coaching staff preached quickness.
Play of the Day:
+ Chiney Ogwumike threw a no look pass in between her legs to a cutting Skylar Diggins to end practice, which earned applause from the entire team and media.
+ Stefanie Dolson looked extremely comfortable out on the floor. With the team short on big's, Dolson showed why Auriemma called her up. Her outlet passes (reminiscent of Kevin Love) were impressive today.
+ Maya Moores leadership is very apparent.
