Sun Select Elizabeth Williams With No. 4 pick; Welcomed By Connecticut Crowd

The crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena had already erupted into a frenzy just minutes before the Connecticut Sun made its selection. Local favorite Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was taken by the Storm with No. 3 pick and the Connecticut faithful erupted to show their support.

And then they had the chance to do it again.

With the fourth pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft, the Sun selected Duke forward Elizabeth Williams. The 6-foot-3 bruiser in the post joins a Sun team that’s ripe with young talent. When Williams’ name was called, the Sun fans made sure their voices of approval were heard.

“It was great. This is an awesome facility,” Williams said of that moment. “I think these fans are amazing and I’m just really excited to be playing here.”

With 2014 Rookie of the Year Chiney Ogwumike slated to miss significant time this season due to a leg injury, head coach Anne Donovan hinted before the draft that the team wanted to draft someone to help provide depth in the post.

Williams, a four-time Associated Press All-American, brings the ability to contribute on both ends of the floor for the Sun. During her collegiate career, she often turned defensive stops into quick offense.

The Virginia Beach, Va. native says she wants to continue building on those skills at the next level.

“Just a big presence – whether it’s offensively or defensively,” Williams said of the skills she brings to the Sun. “A big body post, just being really physical in the paint but also doing the little things, especially on defense.”

At the end of the day, though, just hearing her name called was as much of a relief as any for Williams. After a long week of orientation and the usual draft buildup, hearing her name called as the No. 4 pick was exhilerating.

“It was nerve-racking at first,” Williams said. “Just kind of sitting there waiting for my name to be called, but it’s really rewarding, and this has been an exciting time with these great players. I’m just thankful for the [Connecticut Sun] for choosing me.”
