Sun Re-Sign Jasmine Thomas

Uncasville, Conn. (February 7, 2019) – The Connecticut Sun announced today that guard Jasmine Thomas has been signed to a multi-year contract.

Per team policy, no terms were announced.

In four seasons with the Sun, Thomas has started 133 of a possible 134 games during that span. In 2018, she was second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game and eclipsed 2,500 career points against Los Angeles on August 19. She had a career-high 30 points against Las Vegas on August 5 and scored in double-figures 25 times. Thomas led Connecticut with 163 assists in 2018, including 15 games with five or more assists and two with nine. It was her fourth consecutive season with 100 or more assists.

“We are excited about re-signing Jas to a multi-year contract,” Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “She is a true professional and has been a leader for our young team on and off the court. She creates the pace we desire to play with at the offensive end while spearheading our defensive pressure. Jas has been a cornerstone of the team since my arrival and has played a big part in the resurgence of the Sun franchise.”

An athletic and relentless defender, Thomas was named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team for the second consecutive season in 2018 after a Second Team selection in 2016. She led the Sun with 37 steals in 2018, her fourth consecutive season with 35 or more thefts, while also pulling down 85 defensive rebounds.

“I’m extremely happy to be back with my Connecticut Sun family,” Thomas said. “I’m proud to be part of the growth our organization has made in the last few seasons. Our culture is amazing and our fan support is phenomenal. Connecticut feels like home to me. It’s difficult to keep such a talented group together for multiple seasons, so I’m honored to continue playing with these women. I’m looking forward to my leadership role on and off the court, but also to the emergence of the many young leaders on this squad. We’re determined to hang a championship banner in Mohegan Sun. Let’s get it!”

The 5-foot-9 guard earned her first WNBA All-Star nod in 2017 and has helped the Sun to a 42-26 record over the last two seasons – the third best regular season record in the WNBA over that span.

Selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm out of Duke University, Thomas was traded to the Washington Mystics later that spring and spent two seasons there before being traded to the Atlanta Dream in 2013. She joined the Sun via another trade in April of 2015.

The Sun will open the 2019 WNBA season on Saturday, May 25 against the Washington Mystics. Game time at Mohegan Sun Arena is set for 7:30 p.m. Visit ConnecticutSun.com or call 1-877-SUN-TIXX for more information or to purchase tickets.
