San Antonio Stars Draft Preview
Despite Becky Hammon retiring and joining the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach, the Stars still boast a formidable backcourt that can stack up with just about any in the league. The backcourt combination of Danielle Robinson, Kayla McBride and Jia Perkins is undoubtedly one of the more underrated trios in the league and serves as the strength of this team. Add in center Jayne Appel and power forward Sophia Young-Malcolm, and the Stars have a well-rounded starting five.
But, is it enough to compete in the stacked Western Conference?.
Thursday’s WNBA Draft — where the team holds both the No. 6 and No. 9 selection — could be an opportunity for the Stars, who lost in the Western Conference Semifinals last season, to add some depth to it’s roster in hopes of taking the next step.
“People that can come in, come in the middle minutes of the first quarter and help my team. That would be the place to start,” head coach Dan Hughes said when asked what holes his team may be looking to fill through the draft.
From California’s Reshanda Gray to Tennessee’s Isabelle Harrison, the Stars will have two excellent chances to add depth in the first round. Harrison is a prospect that a number of teams will likely take a hard look at. Once poised to be a top pick, her season was cut short by an ACL injury, which means she won’t be able to play in the 2015 WNBA season.
“She’s going to get healthy again,” Hughes said. “It’s just a matter of when in the draft can you find availability to take that knowing that it’s going to be a while before she plays. But there’s real value in her. And sometimes these situations work out, but it might take a second year.”
