Former Teammates and Opponents on Ruth Riley’s New Position as GM of the Stars

On Wednesday the San Antonio Stars made a splash in their front office with the hire of former NCAA and WNBA champio Ruth Riley.

Riley has enjoyed success at every level of her career, starting with a 2001 NCAA Championship at Notre Dame and culminating in a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics and two WNBA championships in 2003 and 2006 with the Detroit Shock. She is also known for her work in the community and has served as Vice President of the WNBA Players’ Union since 2005.

With the announcement came an outpouring of support on social media:

To one of the finest people walking the planet: Congrats Ruth Riley on your new job!! It's an honor to have played with you, and an even bigger blessing to call you a friend!! Riley also took to Instragram to reflect and thank those who have helped her get to this point:

Blessed to have played in the @wnba for 13 years, I am excited to now transition to a management role as the new GM for the San Antonio Stars. Although my vantage point will change from the court to a seat in the beautifully renovated AT&T Center, my commitment to creating a championship culture is the same. San Antonio is a city that has strong community values, the same ideals that are fundamental to the Stars and the entire organization, and a place that feels like home to me. I am fortunate to have the most experienced coach/GM in the WNBA, Dan Hughes, as a mentor during his final season. Notre Dame was a place that prepared me for my first role in the WNBA as a player, and now graduating with my Executive MBA, it has primed me for this next chapter as well. The 20th anniversary of the WNBA is not only a celebration of how far we have come, but also a declaration of where we are going. I am thrilled to continue to be a part of this journey. @sastars #ndwbb #wnba
