Rookie Kaela Davis Has Monster Debut in Win Over Mercury


PHOENIX – Kaela Davis scored 20 points in her WNBA debut, as the Wings opened the 2017 season with a 68-58 win over the Phoenix Mercury.

After being down by two at the half, the Wings turned up the heat in the fourth quarter, when Davis hit a jump shot to put the Wings up by five, 54-49. Coming into the second half of the game, the rookie out of South Carolina was already in double figures with 10 points.

With 3:19 left in the game, Skylar Diggins-Smith hit two shots behind the line after a foul was called on the Mercury. The two shots gave the Wings their biggest lead for the night, 62-54, which led the team to end the game with a 10 point edge, and their first win of 2017.

Glory Johnson recorded a new season high in defensive rebounds. The forward grabbed 10 on the opposing side of the court, and ended the night with 14.

Allisha Gray and Theresa Plaisance joined Davis in scoring double figures for the afternoon. Gray ended the game with 11 points, while Plaisance recorded 10.
