Fever Quotes:
Fever HEAD COACH Pokey Chatman
(On the game…)
“I’m that person that’s going to always give credit to the opposition, but I know in my heart that we moved the basketball and attacked in that area, and had some open looks that I would want again. You have to knock them down. We wanted to move BG away from the basket, we wanted to get to the third side and attack some people, and we didn’t knock down shots early. What can’t happen is that you can’t let it affect the defensive end of the floor.”
(On team’s energy level…)
“Well they’re pros, do your job. Everybody’s trying to eat. I’ve never had that problem with them. We have some youth that’s learning under the lights, so we always measure certain things and there’s certain things they’re going to learn as we go along. Effort is something I can’t coach. No one can coach that so it’s nice that I don’t have to try.”
fever forward Candice Dupree 4 points | 5 REBOUNDS
(On the game…)
“We’ve just got to be better in transition. More of doing a better job of matching up. They hit a lot of threes. I think Pokey said they scored like 30 points off of their threes. We allowed people to become relevant that usually aren’t relevant, so we just have to be better.
(On youth of team impacting the game…)
“We couldn’t get stops. I mean we showed that when we got stops we were able to get out and get buckets in transition, but we have to do that on a more consistent basis.”
(On their next game against Las Vegas …)
“We’ve got to be ready for them. They’re young, they’re vying for a playoff spot, so hopefully we can go in there and get a win and mess that up for them.”
fever guard Cappie Pondexter 10 points | 1 rebound
(On the shooting performance…)
“I wouldn’t say a downfall. It’s just been a learning curve for us. We’re probably the second youngest team in the league, so when you go against a veteran squad, you don’t have room for error a lot of times. The games that we’ve won we’ve made the fewest errors in the game so that’s just something we continue to learn every single game that we play.”
(On playing Vegas tomorrow…)
“We have to be able to execute. The ball has to be able to move on both sides of the floor. It’s easy to guard us when it’s just sticking to one side. They kind of know our schemes, they know Pokey’s patterns. She’s been in the league for a while but honestly I think in the last few games we’ve allowed so many transition baskets. Defensively that has to be our number one mindset going in to Vegas with a young team. We have to be the team to not allow them to get transition.”
Mercury Quotes:
Mercury HEAD COACH Sandy Brondello
(On coming back from half time with more energy…)
“You know this is a team that can come back out and bring a lot of energy and our focus was… you know sometimes we come out of the locker room you know and not playing as locked in as we should be, we get into a bit of a hole so it was a focus but the girls came out and they really executed the scout and all game really for the most part.”
(On using the bench more…)
“You know I kind of challenged them a little bit and they responded and that’s what you want, you know. You have to come in and I can’t take Diana out for 90 seconds and someone goes on an 8-0 run. We just have to maintain. They just have to be confident, I have confidence in you but you have to come out there and play confident and they did that because they are very capable.”
(On having a chance to move up seeds for playoffs…)
“It has been a long time coming and you know we have been playing better but not for 40 minutes and you know it’s hard, we all hate to lose but there is an opportunity for us to keep growing from this and you know like I said we have to stay even keel, we can’t get too high and we can’t get too low and I thought we did that tonight.”
Mercury CENTER BRITTNEY GRINER 12 points | 9 rebounds
(On how it feels to win…)
“It was awesome, I played 40 the last game but I didn’t have to play the whole game this time. Seeing everybody knock down shots, that was big for us.”
(On the bench stepping up and her role…)
“Yeah I mean if I have to score 36 to win I will do that, if I have to score 2 points and stretch the ball you know I will do that, it’s just every game something different.”
Mercury FORWARD DEWANNA BONNER 13 points | 10 REBOUNDS
(On winning the game and the bench stepping up…)
“Man it has been a long time coming but it was a great opportunity for our bench tonight and I think they did very well. So it was good to be out there you know and sit down and cheer for them. It was very exciting to see them out there playing.”
(On needing a confidence boost before the playoffs…)
“We definitely needed it at this point. At this point it is all about, we know we are in the playoffs so know it is finding a rhythm so when we get there we will be rolling.”
