Phoenix Mercury Re-Sign Olympian Marta Xargay

The three-time WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury today announced the re-signing of Spanish guard Marta Xargay (CHAR-guy), who was the team’s starting point guard for much of 2015 and will represent Spain in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.  Xargay will be in uniform for the Mercury tonight when the Mercury takes on the Indiana Fever at 7 p.m. at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

The 5-11 Xargay played 20 games for Phoenix in 2015, starting the final eight regular season contests (5-3 record), and all four playoff games.  As a WNBA rookie, Xargay averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 assists in 17.5 minutes.  She scored a season-high 15 points against Minnesota on August 7, and dished a season-best seven assists against Los Angeles on August 21.

Unavailable at the start of the 2016 WNBA campaign due to national team commitments, Xargay ranked in the top four on Spain’s national team in points, assists and steals during the FIBA EuroBasket Women’s Qualifiers, the only player on the team to do so. Xargay spent the 2016 EuroLeague season with ZVVZ USK Praha (Prague) where she played alongside Mercury teammates Sonja Petrovic and Candice Dupree. She helped Praha advance to the EuroLeague Final Four, where she averaged 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in Praha’s two games, and was one of five Mercury players in the Final Four (Petrovic, DeWanna Bonner, Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi; Dupree did not play due to injury).
