Mercury's Roster Re-Tool Already Yielding Positive Results

What a difference a week can make.
A week ago the Mercury were reeling. They had just finished a three-game skid where they lost to the Sparks on June 17, and then the Wings in back-to-back contests. It was looking like the 2014 WNBA Champions were facing a tall task if they wanted to get back into the championship contender conversation, especially with the hot starts by LA and Minnesota.
Then, after a rousing victory in the Nation’s capital on Friday that imparted a glimmer of positivity, the Mercury gave the organization and its fans even more hope by making two serious moves to bolster an already talent-laden roster.
Less than 24 hours after the 91-79 victory over the Mystics, the Mercury acquired the rights to power forward Angelica (Angel) Robinson from the Seattle Storm in exchange for Noelle Quinn, and acquired All-Star forward/center Kelsey Bone from the Connecticut Sun in a three-team deal with the Stars.
A fourth-year pro out of Texas A&M, Kelsey Bone has emerged as one of the league’s brightest young post players. She earned her first WNBA All-Star selection last season when she averaged career highs of 15.4 points and 6.3 rebounds, both of which led the Sun, in 33 games (33 starts).
Robinson is a 29-year-old post player who most recently spent 2015-16 in Russia with Nadezhda Orenburg, the team that were runners-up to Diana Taruasi’s and Brittney Griner’s Russian championship squad, UMMC Ekaterinburg. In Euroleague play, Robinson showed her tenacity around the rim averaging 8.8 points, a team-best 8.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.
Bone, however, has the potential to be the biggest difference maker. Also, Bone was selected as the WNBA’s Most Improved Player in 2015 thanks to setting single-season career highs in 10 different statistical categories. She joined names like Skylar Diggins, Kristi Toliver, and Michelle Snow as players who have seen their careers elevated after taking home the award.
“Even though she is in just her fourth year, Kelsey is an established talent in our league and we think this deal makes us a better team today and in the future,” said Mercury GM Jim Pittman after acquiring Bone. “She competes, she rebounds, has great size, and plays with great strength and toughness on both ends of the floor. We are excited about her potential here in Phoenix.”

A day after uprooting from Connecticut to Phoenix, Bone made an immediate impact in the Mercury’s 104-97 OT win in Madison Square Garden. She only saw eight minutes of game action but in that time span recorded six points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field. Her biggest strength, the ability to play with her back to the basket, was on full display in the Garden.
In the coming weeks and months we could look back on June 25th as the day when the Mercury turned their season around by adding new faces to the fold. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more talented roster from top to bottom than the one the Mercury put out, now it’s about incorporating these new but talented players into the rotation and making the playoff run that many thought they would have started since day one.
