NEW YORK, Aug. 26, 2022 – Minnesota Lynx center Sylvia Fowles has been named the recipient of the July WNBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by State Farm for her passion and continued efforts to giving back to youth and the community.
Fowles’ continued focus on the well-being of the Minneapolis-St. Paul community shined throughout her final season in the WNBA. At the start of the 2022 season, Fowles and the Lynx launched the “Syl’s Final Ride” campaign through a season-long partnership with the local nonprofit, Free Bikes 4 Kidz MN, which helps youth ride into a happier, healthier childhood by providing bicycles to those in need. She tipped off the campaign with a community event on April 28 at Bryn Mawr Elementary School, where Fowles spoke to the youth about her love for biking and overall health and wellness.
The 2022 WNBA Kim Perrot Sportsmanship recipient prioritized her commitment to giving back to the community throughout the season. On July 20, Fowles volunteered at Appetite for Change, planting beets in a community garden, which was distributed to local restaurants and farmers markets in North Minneapolis. Additionally, on July 25, in partnership with Slow Roll MSP, Fowles hosted a community bike ride where fans had the chance to bike with her around the local neighborhood and learn about the history of the community.
The WNBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by State Farm® is awarded monthly during the season to the player who best reflects the WNBA’s passion to make a difference in the community.
