Connecticut Sun guard Rachel Banham has been in the league for one season, yet her banner is already hanging in the rafters. Just a year removed from her days playing at Minnesota, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year had her Gophers jersey retired on New Year’s Day before a game against Maryland.

The Gophers raked in their largest crowd of the season while a line for Banham’s autograph snaked around the hall of Williams Arena.

Among the fans showing their support, Kobe Bryant sent his encouragement for Banham via Twitter.

Shoutouts from Kobe on Twitter? Not the first time for Banham. Kobe’s been a fan, tweeting this after Banham scored 60 points in an overtime win at Northwestern:

In her final year with the team, Banham earned Big Ten Player of the Year, First Team All-Big Ten, AP All-America First Team, espnW All-America First Team, and Gophers’ Team MVP — to name a few.

What’s most impressive? Banham tore her ACL in the beginning of the 2015, during what would have been her senior season. After taking a medical redshirt for the year, Banham came back from injury to compete in her strongest individual season, then was drafted by the Sun with the fourth overall pick.
