Becky Hammon Leads Spurs to NBA Summer League Title

WNBA legend Becky Hammon, who made history by becoming the first female head coach of an NBA Summer League team, put an exclamation point on her stint in Vegas by leading the Spurs to the NBA Summer League championship.

San Antonio defeated Phoenix, 93-90, on Monday night to claim the crown. The Spurs ended with a 6-1 record.

Immediate reaction to Hammon’s performance was universally positive. See below for some quotes from her players.

Jonathon Simmons: “She’s a player’s coach. Guys my age all like a player’s coach. She did a great job with us. She was solid the whole way. She did what she was supposed to do. … It’s always good to be a part of history. This day will go down in the books for years to come. … I love her. I barely know her and I love her already.”

Treveon Graham: “She was great. She was just like any other coach. She told us what we needed to do to go out there and perform. It’s great to be able to play with her for her first Summer League, so it was a great experience.”

Kyle Anderson: “That was awesome. She did a really good job. We only lost one game out here in Vegas, and the game we lost she drew up a great play for us. She put us in a great position to win the game with a great play to get a last-second shot; it just didn’t go in. Every other thing other than that, she got our guys ready to play. We got a very difficult system down pat with just a little amount of time.

“When you have mothers or grandmothers or grew up around women, you’re used to hearing a female’s voice. You take heed in what they’ve got to tell you. It wasn’t a difference. She did a great job of communicating to us and getting to us.”

“That’s a big step in the right direction, for her first time to be a head coach and she comes out here and wins a championship. That’s awesome.”
