Friendly Rivalries Endure at Top 20@20 Reunion

MINNEAPOLIS — With the WNBA honoring the Top 20@20 team at halftime of Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, some of the greatest players in league history reunited in Minneapolis on Sunday.
There was plenty of catching up to do, photos to be taken and, of course, reminiscing over their playing days. And just because their playing days are over (for most of the players in attendance), that doesn’t mean the competitive spirit no longer flows through their veins.
“Let me tell you something, nothing about these young ladies has changed — nothing,” former Liberty guard Teresa Weatherspoon said. “That competitive desire is still in there because we’re like we can still go full court (laughs) or let’s just take it half court.
“We’re all still really competitive and it’s just so great to be around everybody to see what everybody is doing and how well everybody is doing. And then just to talk about the fun we had competing against each other.”
With Weatherspoon in the same room as the Houston Comets big three of Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson, you know The Shot had to come up in the conversation.
“We’re great friends and we both have a lot of respect for each other, but I get a chance to tell her that’s my opportunity to just have fun, our team had fun with that,” Weatherspoon said of Thompson, who defended her on the famous shot. “Ultimately they won the title, but her facial expression is truly priceless. The entire thing was just priceless because the confetti was coming down and the arena had just erupted and then it was a straight library. It went from an arena to a library in two seconds.
But the best trash talk about The Shot came on Instagram with Weatherspoon posting a photo of herself smiling and the Comets’ big three stone faced and captioned it: “They are STILL mad. This feels so good!! #TheShot”

This prompted a classic response from Thompson, who reposted Weatherspoon’s picture with a friendly reminder of how that series ended.

I guess some rivalries never end.
