Diggins-Smith, EDD Impressed By Cambage's Record

One day removed from the highest single-game scoring output in WNBA history, Liz Cambage’s 53-point performance is still the talk of the league.

Ahead of a marquee match-up between the Dallas Wings and Washington Mystics (Thursday, 8 PM ET on ESPN2), 2018 WNBA All-Star selections Skylar Diggins-Smith, Elena Delle Donne, and Cambage spoke on the historic performance.

“I have been blessed to be on the floor and witness the top two scoring performances we have had in the league,” said Diggins-Smith on Wednesday’s media conference call. “One was with Riquna Williams, when she scored 51 down in San Antonio, and seeing how she did that.

“And now yesterday’s 53 with Liz. It was such a steady performance for her, and she is so dominant each game, so the domination didn’t surprise me.”

Cambage put up arguably the most dominant all-around performances in league history, let alone the most points: 17-for-22 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, with 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 0 turnovers.

Cambage wasn’t too phased when she realized the game she just had. After all, she has produced big stat lines in leagues before playing in the WNBA.

“I have had big numbers in China and big numbers in Australia over the summer,” Cambage said. “I have seen people on Twitter and Instagram saying that I would never have games like that in America and now, you know, I guess I did! It is funny. People talk so much, but I just let my game speak for itself.”

To her Dallas teammate, Cambage’s overall game is something to see.

“Her dominance in this game is something special,” Diggins-Smith said. “To me she is the most dominant player in the league, and is one of the easiest players to play with.

“She is literally a chick-magnet in the paint in how she attracts 2 and 3 defenders at all times, with them knowing where the ball is going and still not being able to stop her.”

With both teams tied in the standings at 13-9, Washington’s Delle Donne spoke on what it will take to stop the Wings’ dominant center for Thursday’s match-up in Dallas.

“Well, first of all, I hope she got out all her makes in that last game, hoping she doesn’t drop 53 again,” Delle Donne said. “We are going to have practice and obviously send double teams and show her different [defensive looks] all game long. Defensively, we hope to put her in a lot of sets and get her moving, but she is quite the force and we know we can’t just have one game plan going up against her. We will be making a lot of adjustments.”

If Cambage plays anything like she did Tuesday, the Mystics may be in for a long night.
